The Pope is a Tourist

I keep hearing about how great the Pope is because he drives a reasonably priced car and lives in a modest apartment. To me, and many others, this behavior is more insulting than comforting (although to many others it's ok because the pope is the one doing it) At the end of the day he still has no financial worries, his car is, I'm sure, in perfect working order, he will never be stranded on the side of the road, he'll never have to worry about his breaks wearing out, or even if the oil has to be changed. He will never face an eviction notice, or have to choose between getting to work, or keeping the heat on, or food on the table.

He's not "living like the people" he's a tourist putting on the stereotypical trappings of a poor person to make the Vatican look better, and it does more harm than good. When someone in power does things to "act poor" like drive a crappy car, or trim down their belongings to what they can carry, they are a) diminishing the struggles of people who are forced to live that way b) enforcing the stereotype of the poor c) they are doing it for themselves, to make them look better. These actions further the FoxNews narrative that poor people have to be absolutely destitute to be poor, and that they have other means to live their life because hey, the Pope can do it, why can't everyone else? as well as the line that poor people aren't allowed to have nice things, because to be like the poor you have to give up most of your possessions and forms of entertainment until you fit the narrative of poverty.

This isn't exclusive to the Pope by far, I know several well off people who do this stuff, and all those shows about people living off the grid gloss over privileged you have to be to be able to do that sort of thing. , It's a tool used by those in power to diminish the struggle of those they persecute while simultaneously making those they keep down like them better.

We're still waiting for any kind of significant change in the church.

Good thing you posted in here though, otherwise you'd be branded an anti-Catholic bigot (or crank) for criticizing the pope or failing to appreciate the rainbows that shoot out of his ass.

been thinking about this sort of thing recently, and connected it to what he is doing, and being praised for. Plus that other group has no grasp of the concept of privilege, or propaganda when it comes to religion, so I put it where I might be appreciated. Or at least not flat out insulted for having an opinion.

I hesitate to even post articles like this one anymore because there's usually only two responses: dead silence from those who are well aware of the truth but are afraid to criticize the church, or a flaming for speaking out. Even when the subject deals with the misogyny of the church the only place I truly feel safe posting articles like this is at the Women's Rights & Issues group.

Always feel free to post things here, the whole abrahamic system is based on shaming women, even Jesus is based on it (though they try hard to ignore it, or cherry pick it out)

Only last week he gave his last cigarette to a leper. Note, however, that he didn't offer to share it.

He's now wearing 'umble brown shoes from Poland, according to the Papal fanbois on the Internetz.

And I got severely chastised in The Other Group once, for posting Fun Facts about those damn red shoes...of all things.

IIRC, someone posted that the Pope wore red Prada shoes.

Say what? Prada's way too down-market for God's Representative On Earth. Pope Benedict wore red shoes custom-cobbled by Adriano Stefanelli. Steffanelli shoes usually cost about $640/pair, but the Pope got his free. (And that's another angle to this 'umble Pope crap - just how much stuff does he get for free?)

Anyway, at the time, any old ordinary human could also get a pair of Stefanelli shoes for free. Yes, you too could wrap your tootsies in the same soft custom leather as the Supreme Pontiff!

All you had to do was buy one of these, the Pagani Zonda Roadster. Along with your free driving shoes, you also got a set of custom-made luggage. A possibly minor hurdle - the Zonda cost about $1.3 million:
