(19,288 posts)But I laughed. However it is not to everyone's taste. I showed it to another atheist and he was disgusted and offended. I was kind of embarrassed it was so poorly received. Live and learn.

(7,753 posts)I take it that he's also disgusted and offended by child-raping priests? As you say, live and learn.

(19,288 posts)That included: "The Catholic church has no more pedophiles as a group than Dr's, lawyers or police, they are just more honest about admitting".
Something about Baptists, Mormon Bishops, and born agains doing the same thing.....blah, blah, But I felt like I had my ass handed to me, so to speak.
(I love Louis CK. He can do no wrong in my book.)

(9,356 posts)WTF? I'd need more than the 8 arms of the Hindu goddess Kali to do all the face-palming that statement deserves.
Yeah, they admit it. When forced to, after years of stonewalling, playing Musical Dioceses with proven molesters, forcing accusers to drop charges etc. etc.
Check out Alex Gibney's 2012 documentary "Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God."
Deals with a really vile incident - abuse of children at a Catholic-run school for the deaf.
First reported in the 1950s. Not acted upon by the Church until 40 or so years later.
Just IMO - that documentary may have helped with Pope Panzer's sudden decision to resign. The paper trail showed him actively covering up this atrocity.

(9,019 posts)sorry that you were catching shit from your humorless friends.
I don't see that it really matters what the exact rate of pedophilia is among the clergy vs other professions. The stats on this are very skimpy. Reporting is a problem. People don't really want to talk about it. Hopefully, light on the subject can act as a disinfectant.
It's estimated that around 0.3% of clergy are pedophiles. Pope Frankie says that 2% of priests have the problem. Whatever the number, all would agree it's too high.
The real problem I have with the Catholic church (really any church for that matter, but obviously the Catholics are most in the spotlight) harboring pedophiles is that the church, and the clergy, is supposed to have exemplary morals. After all, theyr'e all about the Bible, that ancient instruction manual on how to live. If not them, then who?
Pedophile priests abuse their positions of trust in the community to abuse your children, and then the church hierarchy, if the complaints become too frequent or high-profile, move the good shepherd from one community to another. And the new community gets a new shepherd, and in most cases, the new community has no idea that this shepherd just got moved because he couldn't keep his hands off the other community's children. You don't tend to have that kind of network operating for attorneys, taxi drivers, or any other profession.
I toned this post down considerably from what I originally wrote, but some of the holier-than-thou lurkers will still probably alert on it.

(19,288 posts)His wife and brother are Catholic. Pretty defensive for a non believer. We also cant discuss the I/P situation. We both read Mitchener's The Source and have a heart for the Jews. But I defended the Palestinians right to exist and I don't think we'll go over that topic again.
