(111,267 posts)If Underwood wants to go down the glory gee to beezus road, who am I to complain? I never particularly liked her stuff before now and my opinion hasn't changed.
A lot of believers feel like that when they get dunked. It just wears off too soon and they turn back into the same assholes they always were, only they now get to bully as standins for gawd.

(9,356 posts)I recognized nearly all the songs in the poll, somewhat to my horror...
Here's a slightly "cleaned up" version of Kinky Friedman's "Asshole From El Paso," sung by the man himself. Chinga Chavin did an even raunchier version on his album "Country Porn" many years ago. The key verse:
We don't wipe our asses on Old Glory,
God and Lone Star Beer is all we trust,
We keep our women virgins till they're married
Cause humping sheep is good enough for us...

And to show not all us atheists hate religious-y music, here's a fave of mine - Blind Willie Johnson's "God Moves On The Water:"

(9,289 posts)I am uncomfortably knowledgeable about country music and to a lesser extent Christian rock. In fact, where I live it seems like that is all we have Christian and Country stations. That and Tejano, but I don't speak Spanish so that goes mostly over my head. Anyways, because I am subjected to it nearly constantly, I know nearly every one of those songs intimately.
There are some Christian songs that I like. If it has a good beat and good lyrics I don't mind if it is religious, and I suspect that applies to many of us in this room. Not all of us were raised as atheists, and I bet most of us can understand and emphasize with the feelings religious people experience. Just because we reject those things now, does not mean we can't understand.
That said, I posted this more out of annoyance with people assuming we are up in arms about her song. If we were the type of atheists to get riled up by songs about god...we wouldn't be listening to country to begin with. If we are the type of atheists who like country music, then we should be used to every other song being about god.
I don't hate the song "Jesus take the Wheel" because I don't believe in god, I hate it because its a crappy song that can't even come up with rhymes for its major chorus...
Song list for those wondering about the songs:
1. Ring of Fire-Johnny Cash
2. Sold! (the Grundy County Auction incident)-John Michael Montgomery
3. I got Friends in Low Places- Garth Brookes
4. Jesus take the Wheel-Carry Underwood
5. Devil Went Down to Georgia- Charlie Daniels Band

(7,886 posts)but pretty much every country song is about drinking. I have some friends who are into that music, and in addition to taking a turn for the worse in regards to it's depiction of women (they sure give us atheists a run for our money) I have yet to come across a song that wasn't about drinking, or include it as a theme.

(17,505 posts)How do you get mad AT a song?
"Damn your 4/4 time signature! And what key is that? D major? I HATE D major OOOOOOO.... I'm so mad at you!"
As someone on the site pointed out: The answer to ALL headlines that end in a question mark is "No."
