The Road, by Cormac McCarthy

In a recent thread in this group, one or two of you recommended this book among your favorite books.

I tried to read it, but rarely have I come across a book so depressing and dreary. I got about a third of the way through it and put it down. Life is just too short to spend time on this type of thing. I appreciate fantasy. I like a lot of fiction. But I just don't have time for this kind of apocalyptic indulgence.

Yuk!

1. It took me a year at least.

I would read some then put it down and read something else.

In the end I really appreciated it, depressing as it was.

The movie was pretty good I think in capturing the mood but damn, that book was a hard read for me.

I do not think back on it as the weight it felt like when I read it.

2. It's unremittingly depressing, yes,

but there are surprises.

I won't give anything away here except to say that the final paragraphs moved me to tears.

For my money, Blood Meridian is even bleaker (if you can imagine that), but both were enjoyable reads. Suttree is next on my list.

To each one's own!

Whoo boy! I just got back from the library and returned "The Road" and I picked up "Blood Meridian" which was waiting for me. I'll give it a chance. I'm just glad I didn't purchase these books.

To each their own, indeed.

5. Well, that's just one guy's opinion, but

don't go by me. YMMV, as they say.

You may very well like Blood Meridian. Again, I don't want to give anything away. Seems I've been waiting years to see if this makes it to the silver screen.

6. do you mean The Road and not The Blood Meridian?

I cheated on The Road and skipped to the end. It ended rather as I expected.

I suppose if Cormac's intent was to make us appreciate what we have here and now, he was successful.

...got started one evening and could not stop.

Read the whole thing straight through the night and finished just as the sun was coming up.

I "enjoyed" the movie too.

...if you think Blood Meridian is less dreary than The Road, you're in for a shock.

Judge Holden is a bad guy. VERY bad. In fact, he could be considered the worst human being ever put to print... but then, I'm not so sure he's human.

It gets much worse.

There is beauty to be found even in that which does not bring pleasure.

13. I really liked it. It was hard work, McCarthy has an awkward writing style, but it is well worth it.

The movie was an okay adaptation, but I didn't like the added extras thrown in...

Some shitty movie exec somewhere said 'this is too depressing, make the ending hopeful'.

The story wasn't about hope.
