Every so often I work at a Bank (On call...Servers) ...anyway, this afternoon 2 of the people I sometimes see were there, installing some software while I changed a motherboard and processor. I know from passed experience that these people, who are quite nice, can be..ah..pests, regarding religion. They're Christians (married) and are actually kind folks so I try not to get into the Church thing.
So, he started: "My wife and I were thinking". "We read on the web about the plane that's on the comet and how that comets brought a lot of water to earth"
Me: "Well, it's not a plane...called a probe.
Him: "Oh OK they said those comets crashed into earth."
Me: Yeah but that was millions of...
Him: "What if God told Noah about those comets and the Lord sent them to earth to flood the planet?"
Me: "Paul, that's not a valid point. The water had to get here and eons passed before life even had a chance to start."
Him: "I don't know about that" "That's not what I heard." (Oh Shit, he and his wife went to Church this morning and some Nut gave him the "Reason for the flood"".)
Me: "Paul, we've had these talks before and you know my feelings on the bible thing"
Him "You should come to Chu.."
Me: "NO..I'll pass....
End of Talk with Paul.
15 minutes later, I took a break, went outside and beat my head against a wall. (No not really)

Comets are faster than anything we could ever build and have their own power solving are two problems

If Earth can control the comet transport system we will run the Milkyway. Think about that

"Run the MilkyWay" Yeah, that sounds logical. It's only what?....90,000 light years wide ?

(7,317 posts)to the crazy stuff they make up. As if the crazy stuff already in the Bible was not enough, they have to invent new and improved nonsense. And heaven forbid, they actually consult a scientist when making this stuff up. One call to NASA and that comet theory would have been stillborn.

(18,219 posts)they corrupt it to the point of silliness. Where do they come up with this shit? Or is it that they are trying so hard to keep up with scientific discoveries so they can reconcile their religion with what becomes known?
I understand the desire to beat your head against the wall. It takes great effort to keep from doing it.

I find it interesting that they try to dress up their mythology in science. It just sorta reveals they really deep down think science is correct..... at least until they are distracted by the next ritual or goofy discipline.

(9,356 posts)Comets were considered the messengers of GAWD! And saying otherwise could have gotten you burned at the stake.
Today, we're parking on comets.
That's what I was thinking earlier this week as I watched the landing.
I also like the related names they chose for the comet mission and some of its equipment:
Philae - Egyptian island housing a famous ancient temple complex.
Rosetta - Egyptian town where the You-Know-What Stone was found. Located about 20 miles east of Alexandria, and I went there a couple of times when I lived in Egypt. Aside from its obvious fame, it's also one of only two places today where the Nile River flows into the Mediterranean Sea. The other is Damietta, a little further east. In ancient times, the Nile had seven of those "mouths" flowing to the sea.
Most amazing thing I saw in Rosetta: at Fort Julien, built by Napoleon's soldiers. I was going up to one of the parapets, a great place to see the Nile flowing into the sea. Looked down at the steps, and saw writing. Hieroglyphics. Those French soldiers used ancient relics as construction material. Incredible.
Ptolemy - the famous Macedonian family who ruled Egypt for 300 years.
