cannot POSSIBLY represent reality at all, is highly amusing to me.

Might as well depict her as a Kzinti warrior. Complete with space suit.

The same goes for the baby Jesus, or the grown up Jesus, or God on the Sistine Chapel ceiling.

But it is just art. What makes me laugh is when people really believe that these depictions are the real way that these people would have looked...as if they are portraits.

is how she went from a "young maiden" which is a valid translation of the early wirttings, to a Virgin as the church became more sexually repressive.
