Religion In The Comics - 010

Sex sells! That's why the male writers of the Bible made sure to include scenes of incest and debauchery in its pages. One of the sexiest stories in the Old Testament is that of Samson and Delilah. One look at the cover of this comic and you know you are not in for any boring sermon or wholesome goodness.

This was published by Fox Feature Syndicate in 1950, and can be read in its entirety here: http://comicbookplus.com/?dlid=26897

All kidding aside, this is a pretty good comic. While the art is crude and the printing is poor, the story itself has a lot going for it. Love lost, love found, palace intrigue, betrayal, redemption, not bad for ten cents. And to spice things up, the artist took every opportunity to expose flesh.

My one complaint about the story is the secret to Samson's power. As a kid, I grew up reading superheroes in the comics, and I was exposed to all kinds of origin stories. Superman was from another planet, the Hulk was bombarded by gamma rays, Spider-Man was bitten by a radioactive spider, all rather fanciful but they still had an air of tenuous believability. So when the nuns tried to tell me that Samson's strength came from his long hair, I'm like WTF, you gotta be kidding me

The next image is a collage I made using panels that showed the most skin. While Samson's source of power is laughable, Lois Lane never dressed like this.

had to chuckle when reading about how 'claws filed to dullness' works in a world of fantasy. it always works well in real life. the story comes from the good book so it must be true though.

It seems at least one arm was always thrust up over her head or thrust back away from her chest at all times.

but that Lee Ames cover is very nice.

It's safe to assume this was an adaptation of the Victor Mature movie.

Many versions have been quoted over the years. Here it is in his own words, from "An Evening With Groucho:"

I was once invited to Cecil De Mille's projection room, and they were running "Samson and Delilah" with Hedy Lamarr and Victor Mature...

So Cecil De Mille came up to me, when the picture was over and he said "How did you like the picture?" I said "It'll be a failure." And he said "Why? Why will it be a failure?" "Because you got the characters wrong. Victor Mature has much bigger knockers than Hedy Lamarr."

They never asked me at the Paramount again.

FTR, Victor Mature thought the wisecrack was hilarious.

She was co-holder of the Lamarr-Antheil Patent on torpedo anti-jamming devices. Technology later leveraged for use in cell phones and many other devices:

Once again, I try to post some drive-by snark and get lured down an Internet rabbit hole...not that I mind in this case.

A sad bit of trivia here, from IMDB:

In the film 'Sunset Boulevard' (1950), when the character played by Gloria Swanson (Norma Desmond) visits Cecil B. DeMille, he is directing 'Samson and Delilah' - the cast and crew can be seen briefly in 'Sunset Boulevard' taking a break.

Sad because, according to this review of Ruth Barton's book about Lamarr...

Her decline resembled something out of "Sunset Boulevard."

In 1966, by now residing in a mansion with broken windows and a swimming pool filled only with muddy rainwater, she was arrested for shoplifting...

Her final years were a doleful cocktail of botched plastic surgery and increasing isolation in a small apartment in Florida where she spent her time watching daytime television.

Barton's attempt to illuminate this most mercurial of movie stars is a fascinating read - intriguing, tender, wise, and impeccably researched throughout. The result is a real page-turner.

Yeah I know, it's the Daily Fail, but this was a good piece...
