Another thing that's worth noting about what Fry said: In some areas of the world, remarks like his -- even coming from "a national treasure" -- would prompt much more than a heated debate.
They could get him arrested, or worse.

(18,219 posts)I speak my mind without worrying about how it come across, then I have that "oh dear" feeling. But I am lucky enough that I don't have to watch a video of it after the fact.
However, I loved his video. It was perfect.

(49,533 posts)There is a cultural element - so many of us Americans have been trained (at least outside of NYC) to refrain from going overboard in expressing our true feelings about something. It's fun watching Brits who clearly have no problem with it going off on someone. Maybe that's why I like Hell's Kitchen so much.

It certainly helps make a bunch of plays and movies and TV series!
