http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2971508/Unidentified-attackers-hack-US-blogger-death-Dhaka.html"Roy 'was the target because of his crime against Islam,' the group said on Twitter.
The bio-engineer, who was a naturalized U.S. citizen, was a prominent voice against religious intolerance, and his family and friends say he had been threatened for his writings.
Roy, who was about 40 years old, and his wife were ambushed as they walked toward a roadside tea stall, with at least two of the attackers hitting them with meat cleavers, police Chief Sirajul Islam said.
'Several attackers took part in the attack and at least two assailants hit them directly,' Islam said, adding that two blood-stained cleavers were found after the attack."
Seems like a wonderful couple.

(49,533 posts)But it's not about religion. Because wonderfully wise and tolerant people on the Interwebz have said so. And they know Islam better than the people who actually identify with it.

(26,650 posts)I don't see how this is possible. I wonder what will happen in America when, what I believe to be inevitable, Christianity is made the state religion? I believe this may be only a couple of elections away, especially as our warming planet becomes more hostile.

(9,035 posts)There would be enough of a push-back to keep America (basically) secular. But we sure could use a new education push to try to wean the young-uns off of the religious teat.
The murder of Roy is not really that unexpected. He'd been receiving death threats for a long while. It's totally fucking wrong, but not unexpected, considering the ferocity with which some practice Islam.

(26,650 posts)the majority of Republicans favor making America a Christian state and they seem to be winning quite a few elections these days. I know they're the minority, but they seem to be the majority at the ballot box, or, who ever may be counting the ballots. Whatever, for a "dying" party, the GOP is winning elections and the majority of Republicans favor establishing Christianity as a state religion.

(18,219 posts)I "hope" that it doesn't happen here, but it already is close to the US having a state religion. At least is we are to call "Christianity" a religion. Most people who are not believers is Jesus are not going to win elections, and in fact, they will be attacked by their opponents on that basis. The majority believe that you cannot be moral if you are not Christian. And I believe that it is getting harder to be a Muslim in this country because of the actions of militants. There isn't much left who are accepted.
I hope you are right.

I don't doubt that certain parties will shift gears on their 'seal the borderz!' rhetoric to mean keeping people IN, should there be a mass exodus afoot.

(18,219 posts)I cannot see anything that would upset their theocracy more than having people who refuse to accept it.
Or maybe they will keep us here and take away our rights so that we have no power unless we "convert"????

(33,615 posts)the "majority" (not defined) of religious people support the same things most Humanists and secular minded people support.
The only difference is they do it because of their interpretation of religion, as oppose to seeing it as simply morally right.
