Religion is dying in the USA

http://www.pewforum.org/2012/10/09/nones-on-the-rise/

A Pew research study finds that 22% of Americans, especially younger adults, now claim no official religious beliefs, the second largest group in the country, after Protestsnts (48%).

This is great news. Of course, the media darlings who love them a huckster or a Palin, or any president who closes any speech with "God bless America," might be taken aback by this. Too bad.

This shows that there still is hope for the country's future.

I believe

That I will celebrate!

but I think it will get worse before it gets better. I would not be surprised to see Obama in a position of having to veto legislation declaring America a "Christian Nation," and I think that will be perceived as an impeachable offense. This "Christian Nation" bullshit train is on a roll.

4. and Pat Robertson is helping it along

Keep it up, Pat. One would hope that all the kooks and freaks who proclaim Biblical bullshit will eventually alienate thinking people. Keep talking the crazy talk, you old fart.

Story below. If you can't see the video, you can see it at the link.

Televangelist Pat Robertson said on Monday that people who smoked marijuana, used cocaine or consumed alcohol had been enslaved by vegetables.

“God gave you and me as human beings authority, he gave us dominion over everything on this Earth,” the TV preacher explained on Monday’s 700 Club. “Over all the animals, all the snakes, all the birds, all the plants, all the vegetables.”

“Cocaine is the product of a vegetable, alcohol is the product of a vegetable, marijuana is a vegetable,” he continued. “And yet, people are enslaved to vegetables. And you were made in the image of God. God made you in his image to reign and rule with him. He gave you incredible authority.”

“Why would you become a slave to a vegetable? Why? Why would you do it.?

Robertson said that he had “seen a lot of stuff” in his lifetime so he understood that people had a lot of problems, “but God Almighty can deliver you from the bondage of your addiction.”

“Your slavery to vegetables, he can set you free,” he insisted.

The United States Department of Agriculture officially classifies cannabis as “herb.”

Just stop eating them and see how long it takes to get rickets.

I'm much more a slave to carrots or blackened peas than ganja.

who want to join church groups like their friends at school.

The young usually abandon religion in great numbers because it interferes with a frenetic weekend social life and who the hell wants to get up early to sit in a church with a hangover?

I'm an old Boomer who saw exactly the same thing, our elders despairing of our apostasy and our kids clamoring for the community that churches provided. Some of us provided taxi service to the churches for the kiddies, most went in with them.

9. Our religionists are quick to point out that "no official religion"

is not "no religion". Although as they claim that one of the chief benefits of religion is the "community" that it supposedly brings it is hard to see how this fallback position is helpful.
