Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumNothing confirms atheism to me more than correcting student essay papers.
I wanted to draw a giant "X" on the last paper I looked at, and then write, "There is no God," on it.
Fucking Christ.

I feel your pain.

(21,852 posts)I assume that the papers were not well written or not well thought out. How does that confirm atheism? I just don't see the connection between poor students and either religion or atheism.
My experience is that poor students come in lots of flavors.

(29,047 posts)There is no real connection between student papers and the existence of any god.

(8,763 posts)one of these days I'm going to make a gif of a shadow figure wearing a sombrero buggering a shadow dude with a shiny halo. I'm going to upload it, and every time I want to use the phrase "Jesus fucking Christ!" I'm going to link to it.
But then I'd have to get better at making shadow figures...

2. i love that you have that universe scale link in your sig. i must've watched that a dozen times now. showed my oldest daughter this weekend. she was utterly fascinated. we watch every "scale of the universe" vid we can find on the internet. this one was by far the most fascinating.

(14,860 posts)The link in your sig takes me to a 4chan 404 page...that isn't what it's supposed to be, right?

(29,047 posts)I don't know the problem. Brice seemed to handle the link just fine. Maybe I should ask others to try it.

(8,830 posts)a very fundamentalist Christian female in my class (European history). She was also a young Republican (or that ilk). Every other discussion post (online class) was a diatribe based on either - or both - of her pet issues. Nothing seemed to stop her; I could only slow her down on occasion. She never went over the line and always managed to answer the questions posed; she was savvy enough to avoid just enough contention that I couldn't justify tossing her out of the class. Her papers were nightmares of illogic and paranoia.
It was a long semester.
This semester, I have a very in-your-face, abrasive Jewish female in the class (same course). After the second chapter readings, which examined - among other things - the rise of religion in the Middle East, she wrote me a four page long rant accusing the textbook author of anti-Semitism. She offered up no less than six examples of how he was wrong. She was incorrect in five of the six cases. She finished her rant with the following line: "So, dude or dudette . . . excuse me, PROFESSOR dudette . . ."
It took me an hour to dislodge my eyebrows from my hairline. Only because I have decided to make her term as nightmarish as she will undoubtedly make mine is she still in my class.
My colleagues suggest that next semester I'll have a fanatically devout Muslim, and a repeat of the last two terms.
If nothing else, teaching confirms my atheism.

(8,830 posts)You either laugh, cry, or tear out your hair.
I choose to laugh - if for no other reason than because crying makes my nose stuffy and it hurts too much to tear out my hair!

(10,847 posts)A few semesters ago in my qualitative research class I was discussing interpretivism and multiple social realities with my doctoral level students. After my lecture one of my students said, "Well there is only one reality I know and it is the Lord Jesus Christ. That's all there is."
I actually did a face palm and the rest of the class started cracking up. I didn't mean to be so blantantly rude to the guy but, Jeebus! Way to NOT get postmodern thought, pal.

(1,951 posts)I can think of a couple specific teachers who probably wept for humanity as a direct result of things I said as an 18/19-year-old fundamentalist idiot. But my idiocy was ramped up to 11 because they were challenging things I had never bothered to question before. I've honestly thought before about writing them an apology/thank-you, if I could find their contact info on my alma mater's site.
