Marin Catholic nuns boycott classes due to gay awareness day

http://www.marinij.com/social-affairs/20150422/marin-catholic-nuns-boycott-classes-due-to-gay-awareness-day

Five nuns who teach at Marin Catholic High School walked away from their classes last week to demonstrate their disdain for a national Day of Silence aimed at raising awareness about anti-lesbian and anti-gay language and bullying.

...

The sisters wrote: “We went home on Friday because what happened was inappropriate. We went home because we were made to feel uncomfortable and used for another’s agenda. We went home because the Catholic school and faith that we love was being compromised.”

Oh and they pulled out this nasty response too:

The nuns said they were not anti-gay, writing that: “Like the Church, the Sisters do not support any sexual activity — heterosexual or homosexual — outside of a marriage between a man and woman. However, we accept, respect, and treat with dignity all those who believe and/or act differently. We do not support bullying, bigotry, or any kind of prejudice.”

I would laugh if I hadn't seen some Catholic DUers invoke the exact same fucking ridiculous justification for bigotry.

"We're not bigoted - we merely oppose anyone having sex outside of a marriage between a man and a woman! Gay people can have all the sex they want in a heterosexual marriage, too! See how accepting and tolerant we are?"

doesn't that make Jesus a polygamist of the highest order?

Oh wait. Another metaphor. This religion crap can be really confusing.

Wish there were some scholars out there to clear things up.

someone should inform the catholic church that hiding child molesters is a far worse crime than having sex outside of marriage. It might also be a good to remind the church that saying their blessed sacrament of marriage that no man can put asunder unless one pays a small fee to the church to allow for an annulment doesn't exactly scream consistency of effort or moral high ground...

What's truly annoying is hearing these believers tell me I must respect their religion because they have the right to believe whatever they like. That's patently untrue. The 1st amendment says the GOVERNMENT can't intrude into their religion, while the other component of the 1st amendment allows me to point out every single day just how ridiculous their belief system is when pedophiles are hidden and moved to another unsuspecting community to prey upon new victims and when the pope himself allows a sack of shit like the cardinal from Scotland to resign over sexual misconduct but retain his title...

They want to tell me about the morality of the actions of adults who have sex outside of marriage? Really? Perhaps when they can figure out how to maintain the morality of their disgusting group of organizationally protected sex criminals I might have a modicum of respect, until then they can kiss my ass as I will never respect an organization responsible for large scale pedophilia...it should be forcibly disbanded as an organization and removed from the lists of tax-exempt entities for those criminal acts just like any other RICO band of criminals.

Dear jurors, this is posted in the Atheist Forum a safe haven for Atheists to express their distaste for all things religious. It's not meant for general consumption by the DU religious faithful who seem to delight in misunderstanding the term safe haven and the concept that some people like me don't give a rat's ass what they believe since what they believe has as much evidentiary support as luminiferous ether or santa claus...

My apologies to those poor souls so afflicted but they should remain outside this group to avoid having to consider uncomfortable realities.

But they were being compromised by showing up for school on a day to raise awareness of anti-gay language and bullying.

Does that sound stupid to anyone else????

It isn't like they were told to participate in gay or lesbian sex acts!

If it is deeply and sincerely felt, then it is just another way of knowing and we need to shut up and not criticize. Or so we are told.

It's freedom!

The walkout comes on the heels of another controversy involving Marin Catholic and the Catholic Church’s edicts concerning homosexuality. Last month, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone proposed requiring teachers and staff members at Marin Catholic and three other parochial high schools to accept contract and handbook language condemning homosexuality, same-sex marriage, abortion and birth control.

I thought the pope already has that covered, why would they need to put it in the handbook? Just listen to Frank, kids, he'll teach you how to be properly homophobic and misogynistic.

Many of my hs friends attended catholic schools from kindergarten to jr high, and some of the stories they told...

One day I brought a science-fiction paperback to school. It was the first real book I bought with my own money. I thought it was a move up the literary ladder from comic books, so I was proud to put it on my desk on top of my Catechism texts. The nun I had that year immediately seized it and said she would see if it was appropriate. She never returned it. To this day, I wish I could remember what it was.

Did your parents say anything?

One of my brothers was a south paw and our teacher said it was a sign of the devil, she tied his hand behind his back for weeks (we were in a public school). I finally told my father about it because my brother wouldn't and wow, I don't remember him ever being so angry.

Having attended catholic school, I can attest to that.

Ruler smacks on knuckles might be a joke, but I witnessed truly abusive behavior by some who should have been retired decades--yes, decades--before being allowed to continue in charge of a roomful of ten-year-olds.

Some of those women hated children, they never would have kept their jobs in a public school.

I don't know why they taught, maybe it's the only gig they could get.

....I was raised Catholic and the church I remember was pretty damned progressive in the late 60s and early 70s. I left, then gave it another try in the early 2000s, and I attended a Catholic church where one of the lecterns was a married lesbian woman, and the entire congregation celebrated the couple when they had a baby. There was a priest who was suspected of marrying gays in private ceremonies (and yeah, he was in a hell of a lot of trouble for that - he was run out of the parish).

That's wildly different than the gay-hating Catholics we see. They can't all be right. So which is it? Tolerance, as their jesus supposedly teaches them? Or condemning all who don't follow their strictest and made-up dogma?

They're cheap when it comes to paying us, but they're outspoken supporters of gay rights, women's rights, and stoop the wars. A very good feature of working for nuns instead of priests, monks, etc.
