Hatred is poison. When we hate, we join their team. Hatred for the "other" is what they do. Demonizing others is what they do. Which does not mean that we have to accept their evil hatred.

I disagree. I don't follow that belief you have. Hate is Not always bad especially twords people that seek to destroy everything good in this country is healthy it shows integrity and boundaries and sound ethics in this situation.

I am a Buddhist. Just because I don't cultivate hatred doesn't mean that I can't look with discriminating awareness at what appears to me as evil and disgusting, and not flinch. I see Trump and his enablers as deeply ignorant, creating endless suffering for themselves and others.

I believe that for people like Trump, the only way for them to change for the better is for something very painful and catastrophic to happen to them. And even then, probably not. Such hatred is a blind, unconscious habit. It's very very difficult to break an old habit, but it can be done with the right intention, motivation, and persistence. None of which Trump has or is likely to get.

To me, Trump is a masters class in ethical morality. He exemplifies everything that ethical morality is NOT. He also demonstrates the law of karma, which when his bears fruit will bring him crashing down with a sonic boom. The wheel of sharp weapons is rolling his way, and it will roll right over him. He is not a happy man.

In the Buddhist path, we aspire to liberate all sentient beings from suffering and ignorance. Yes, even the Donald Trumps of this world.

and I can understand the sentiment but I think humans are a bit more complicated than your philosophy allows. You know, the evangelicals say the same thing, "I don't hate the person, I just hate what they do". That's about as disingenuous as one can get; the person is what they do, what they do is the person, therefore they hate as a passive aggressive act. Jihadists have a more psychopathic bent saying something similar but it's more of a dismissal of one's humanity admitting you to hell at Allah's command which alleviates resposibility.
I don't think we can dismiss hundreds of thousands of years of evolution. I tend to think we humans need to recognize all our emotions and understand them. To dwell on any one emotion is just as unhealthy as dismissing one. To dwell on hate to the exclusion of empathy is certainly not condusive to a balanced understanding of reality, but to dismiss it is to fall into the trap of denial which seems to permeate society now.

Buddhist philosophy and psychology is a profound 2600 yr old path. We do not concern ourselves with whether there is a god or not. Buddhism only tries to answer the questions of how can we be happy, and what is the cause of suffering, and how do we eradicate suffering? We also do not proselytize and convert people. One must ask for teachings and actively seek out authentic Buddhist teachers.

A core belief of Buddhism is that the "self" is a made-up non-existent fiction that only SEEMS real. And emotions SEEM real, but they also are completely empty of any independent self-existent reality. Emotions, like concepts, are imaginary without mass. They can't be weighed on a scale, but they SEEM real. That in a nutshell is the Buddhist teaching on emptiness. I know at first that it doesn't make any sense. It took me many many years (I'm 72) of Buddhist study and contemplation to get insights into the Buddhist teachings on emptiness. As best I understand it, the only thing I can ever know is my own experience, which is completely subjective. There's what we tell ourselves about how things are, and then there's how things objectively exist independently of our subjective opinions and judgements.

I ask myself, what would the Dalai Lama see if he met Trump? Whatever that is, it's what I want to see also.

Or as my Daddy used to say, a difference of opinion is what makes a horse race.

Although my atheism does not recognize the metaphysical aspects, so in that regard we will part ways. I view human life anthropologically and historically. Boring as it seems it is what makes sense to me.
You made a comment in a previous post about cultivating hatred. I view the emotion completely differently from cultivation but if you recognize emotion as illusory then there's no sense in going there.

Just because one is currently a minority, doesn't make us safe from their "belief system." I fear any religious thought that gains a majority. Intolerance and persecution are soon to follow comfort.

I was once a fundie for 1 year ( assemblies of god )but it traumatized me. Sometimes hate is part of the healing process.

I despise religious fanatics.

But I need money and food. So I put on the face (gird my loins as I tell the hubby) and go. I smile, try to help, and maintain us as needed. I'm lucky in that I don't have to support or spread it. Still it makes me feel gross.
