Typhoon Hagibis: Monster storm could become strongest on Earth

TYPHOON HAGIBIS is rapidly intensifying in the Pacific Ocean and forecasters are now warning the monster storm could become the strongest storm on Earth.

Typhoon Hagibis is rapidly gathering strength in the western Pacific. The powerful monster storm is forecast to whip out winds of 161mph as soon as tomorrow, the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre has said. That would make Hagibis the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir Simpson Wind Scale - the strongest category there is.

Weather Network meteorologist Tyler Hamilton said Hurricane Dorian, which caused extensive damage to the Bahamas last month, was the strongest storm on Earth so far, considered in terms of pressure.

Hurricane Dorian has a pressure of 910 millibars but Hagibis could extend this as the forecast show it develop into a super typhoon this week.

Super typhoons are tropical cyclones in the Western Pacific Ocean with winds of at least 150mph, equivalent to at least a higher-end Category 4 hurricane.

Hagibis was located more than 400 miles east-northeast of Guam as of Monday morning local time.

The scale is based on damage it can cause. Cat 5 represents the most possible damage that can be done to structures or land. IOW 250 mph can't do anymore damage than 160 mph. They both flatten anything in their path.
