Related: About this forumSelf-freezing bottled Coca-Cola now available at convenience store vending machines in Japan
Stored at temperatures below freezing, the drink magically turns to ice inside the bottle after opening.
Back in 2010, our Japanese team had their first encounter with a revolutionary new product called Super Chill!! Coca Cola. The drink was displayed as part of a promotional event, with models demonstrating how a regular bottle of coke could take on an icy, slushie-like texture after simply being opened and turned upside down.
In the six years since, the unusual beverage has appeared in vending machines in Hong Kong and now, finally, coke lovers in Japan will be able to enjoy the self-freezing drink, with specially designed machines being deployed at 1,000 7-Eleven convenience stores in the Tohoku region and on the island of Shikoku.
Our Japanese reporters were keen to try the drink for themselves, but with no vending machines in the Tokyo area, they had to take a road trip all the way up to Tohokus Akita Prefecture to get their hands on one. It was a long trip, but as soon as they laid eyes on the new equipment in-store, they knew the journey was worth it.

(2,212 posts)In the middle of summer, few things are as refreshing as a Coca-Cola Slush Puppie, and this looks even better.
Apparently, this product works on the principle of supercooling, which is the cooling of water or a water-based solution below its freezing point without allowing crystallization to occur. Once the liquid is disturbed, the crystallization process begins and spreads through the drink rapidly. Here's a video demonstrating the phenomenon with bottles of Fiji water.

Like fruit juice? Or a cocktail?

(2,212 posts)Fruit juice, unless it's been filtered to be absolutely clear, probably woudln't work because any pulp--even the tiniest amount--would create sites for nucleation, the starting point of crystallization. But fruit juice that's been filtered through a coffee filter might work.

(2,249 posts)I won a prize can from a Coke machine a few years back. Still haven't opened it.
Orange coke is also sold in Japan. It tastes like Coke with Orange,
I guess that prick in the video forum who responded to this just doesn't like Coke, or doesn't like you or Japan, or all the above. Dunno.

(2,249 posts)a Miyazaki film in its entirety! It's pathetic. Where I stay in the greater Tokyo area is pretty close to where his studio is though, and I visited a public park museum nearby which had a celebration of his work one time. I think the only Japanese anime i've ever watched to the end was Graveyard of the Fireflies which broke my damn heart.
-Never been to that part of the country either. Thanks for the pics, looks lovely. Over the years I've traveled to a fairly extensive amount all around central Japan and all the way North to Sapporo.
