Lucky charm

A customer pays for a hozuki Chinese lantern plant during the annual Hozuki-ichi fair at Sensoji temple in Asakusa, Tokyo, on Saturday. About 120 stalls were set up for the weekend festival, which dates back to the Edo period (1603-1867). Tradition says eating the plant’s orange flesh at the fair can help heal diseases. “I came here to buy [hozuki] as a lucky charm,” said a 76-year-old visitor from Misato, Saitama Prefecture.
