In 2010, my daughter was a rising university senior who juggled intense academics with part time jobs and a full-time summer internship to help pay for her education. She paid social security and medicare, but her total income was way too low for income taxes. She would have been one of Mitt Romney's 47 percenters who does not "take personal responsibility and care for their lives".
Now she is a hardworking engineer who probably pays a higher income tax percentage than Romney. He hasn't deigned to release more than one year of tax returns so as far as we know, he doesn't pay any income tax and is a 47 percenter himself.

(14,195 posts)Sadly dad passed away at 63, so now mom is a 47%er on her own at 85.
They worked hard and played fair, and paid their taxes too. Unlike the 4,000 millionaires who are ALSO part of the 47%.
is rmoney a 47%er?we don't know because he hasn't deigned to release his tax releases..... But we do kow that for at least one year he paid at least 13% which is way less than the rate we pay....

(912 posts)She has her degree in architecture but is still in school for her masters. I resent that Romney says he will never convince her she should take personal responsibility and care for her life. Her working every summer as a waitress and getting back the federal income tax makes her a moocher? Why should she be taxed on her 2-3 thousand income a year when he gets every tax write off in the books and lowers his rate to 13% (well, if we can even believe that). I think most Americans would rather give a subsidy in the form of a tax break to a working student than to a multi millionaire. I think he has no empathy for anyone, he probably can't understand why she just doesn't sell her birthday stock to have the money to live on (sarcasm). Oh yes, she got clothes and school things for her birthday, guess I should have been thinking ahead and bought her stock.

(1,273 posts)I am still steamed thinking about not just my daughter, but my aunt who worked hard all her life and is now just getting by on a small pension and social security. She doesn't pay income tax either.
Most of us probably have family members or friends in the 47 percent and who are in no way moochers.
