2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumFloat an attack. Get it out there, then deny it.
A time tested tactic.
Brock got out what he wanted to get out: Bernie Sanders is too old and decrepit to be President. And if he's not sick now, he will be.
Then walk it back. Who us? Of course we wouldn't do any such thing!
So typically Clintonian.
But hours later, after this report was published and Brock's planned tactics were widely criticized on Twitter, campaign chairman John Podesta distanced himself from the surrogates attack.
@DavidBrockDC chill out, Podesta tweeted Saturday night. Were fighting on who would make a better President, not on who has a better Physical Fitness Test.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2015/05/12/how-a-super-pac-plans-to-coordinate-directly-with-hillary-clintons-campaign/
"How a super PAC plans to coordinate directly with Hillary Clintons campaign:
"Hillary Clintons campaign plans to work in tight conjunction with an independent rapid-response group financed by unlimited donations, another novel form of political outsourcing that has emerged as a dominant practice in the 2016 presidential race.
...
...Correct the Record believes it can avoid the coordination ban by relying on a 2006 Federal Election Commission regulation that declared that content posted online for free, such as blogs, is off limits from regulation.
...
The rules totally exempt individuals who engage in political activity on the Internet from the restrictions of the campaign finance laws. The exemption for individual Internet activity in the final rules is categorical and unqualified, then-FEC Chairman Michael E. Toner said at the time,"
Cool eh? They can work directly with "content posted online for free, such as blogs".

(17,196 posts)why I'm supporting bernie - he is not dirty.
Bettie
(16,109 posts)that seems like reaching. One cannot avoid aging, it happens to all of us, unless we're dead.
Gman
(24,780 posts)So I guess things change out of convenience.
Bettie
(16,109 posts)just because someone else did it in the past, doesn't make it suddenly the right thing to do.
Gman
(24,780 posts)Should have never attacked her age back then.
Bettie
(16,109 posts)Because I don't recall that.
And so, now anything goes because "someone else might have done it"?
Is she going to start having her surrogates go out and ask when Bernie stopped beating his wife because someone else might have used that at some point as well?
Or is this just another pile of sour grapes about how this was supposed to be a coronation and people are angry that there are other candidates in what was supposed to be a one person race?
Gman
(24,780 posts)And refused any affiliation with the Democratic Party.
Many of the people here were very vocal about Hillary's age in 08. Now they apparently want it both ways.
Bettie
(16,109 posts)I have said as much.
Age is a fact of life. As we live, we age. None of the candidates on either side should be disqualified because of age.
There are plenty of other arguments to be made, so I wonder why that choice was made.
"He did it first (points to other person)" isn't a good argument and certainly doesn't add to the discourse at all.
Gman
(24,780 posts)And I'm just pointing how ridiculous Sanders supporters here are. They have zero credibility.
Bettie
(16,109 posts)And a lot of the former Obama supporters are now Clinton supporters.
Look, I get that many of the Clinton people are angry that, well, anyone else is running. It was supposed to be "her turn" and it is difficult for them to accept that this won't be a coronation. She's going to have to work for it and her candidacy is not written in stone.
If she found ageist attacks to be unsavory when they were directed at her, you'd think she'd avoid the same by herself or her surrogates.
Also, just because you disagree with my choice of PRIMARY candidate does not make me ridiculous or non-credible. It makes me a person whose opinion on which candidate I would prefer to see become the presidential candidate.
No one is inevitable.
Bluenorthwest

(1,499 posts)about exposing faults being part of politics, but are you seriously saying Bernie's age is a fault?
Just saying it's fair game.
Uponthegears
(1,499 posts)you, that seems like a slippery slope. I understand we are going to hear "Bernie's age" arguments from the TeaOP if he is nominated (and Trump isn't their nominee) and maybe Bernie supporters need to be able to defend against it. My problem is that, as between we Democrats, fighting tooth and nail over issues which are NOTHING but RW talking points (whether they be Bernie's age or Hillary's fall), raises the temperature at DU more than it prepares either of our front runners for the general election.
There have to be better things to argue about.
Gman
(24,780 posts)But when Sanders supporters copy and paste attacks on Hillary from right wing websites they have little credibility on issues anyway. Then you get this kind of bickering. They reduced the debate to this.

Yet, as Hillary said on
George S. Sunday show-Hillary hopes that Bernie will also evolve on Charleston loophole.
Update:
Now Bernie is on George S. and twice will not answer George's question "Will you vote to close the Charleston loophole". Twice, Bernie changed the subject.
Now George is asking about how Bernie will pay for his health care plan. And Bernie is playing the victim. Does not answer him.
Gerorge asked twice if he would put out how his plan will be funded before the Iowa caucus--and after goiing around the Bush-Bernie finally conceded that he will put out a funding plan. So, the wait is on.
Wow. Berniie keeps saying not good to back 20, 30 years to look at past behaviors, voting etc. Hope he follows his own advice.
I have to say--I watched both interviews -Hillary and Bernie just now. IMHO Hillary gave good concise answers-was relaxed. while Bernie was almost yelling and agitated--beating around the bush while not answering. Wonder what the debate will be like tonight.

(20,582 posts)But when used to discuss a man who's running for office, it's obvious that it was brought up to attack him for his age. Which is bigotry, pure and simple.
Chemisse
(30,811 posts)He is far more likely to die in office than someone 20 years younger. It's not bigotry; it's acknowledging a basic biological fact of life.
If there were two candidates who were identical except for age, I would vote for the younger one. Anybody would.
But they aren't identical - not even close. People have to decide if all of his positive attributes outweigh the age concern.
And it's better he gets attacked for it now than later, in the GE. As I said in another post, he should embrace it and make it part of his appeal. He could pull that off easily.
polly7
(20,582 posts)I stated that some of us are much healthier mentally and physically than others as we age - FACT. Bernie Sanders is more intelligent and active than many 40 and 50 y/o's I know - FACT.
But yes, talking about his age ......... that, to me, is one of the factors that tells me exactly how much he cares about changing things for the better for all people. He could be relaxing at home and enjoying his grandchildren, taking these years easy and doing the things many his age do after a lifetime of sacrifice and hard work. He's NOT.
I doubt very much he'd have even joined the race for president had he thought someone else was going to step up to the plate and try to do all the things that will change this world. He knows what has to be done, his whole heart is in it and I think of him almost as a hero for his sacrifice and doing what he is.
Chemisse
(30,811 posts)So do I. But everybody has to decide that for themselves.
And he is very active. That's a good sign, but it's not a guarantee that he is healthier than anyone else his age.

(11,746 posts)I was as clear as I could be: "He is old, and he will get sick and die. That's why we had a Constitutional Amendment to limit a president to two terms."
The fact is that Bernie is old. One day he will get sick, and one day he will die. Yes, as we all will.
And this is a factor to be weighed. After doing some research I am not as confident in my second sentence but it is clear that Roosevelt dying in office had something to do with it.
Beyond that I said nothing. You and some others here have chosen to suggest otherwise, but your comments say more about you than about anything I said or meant to say.

You can easily apply that spin to statements from any surrogate for campaigns.
It's as good as a lie to claim collusion without proof.

"according to a Democrat familiar with his thinking who was not authorized to preview any strategy."
That's a new way to sell a rumor, 'familiar with his thinking.' That's really weak reporting and should not be given as much credibility as it's gotten.

Unless you or anyone else can show proof other than a third-party source who claims to be 'familiar with Brock's thinking' you've got a pretty weak reed to hold onto. Using this as a platform for all of the broad accusations which you've made is slippery politics.

(9,654 posts)He runs a superpac that, because of a loophole in the rules, is allowed to coordinate directly with Hillary Clinton's campaign.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2015/05/12/how-a-super-pac-plans-to-coordinate-directly-with-hillary-clintons-campaign/
Toner said at the time," ///////////////////////////////////
so basically the best spin that hc can put on this is ,she has lost control of her campaign
