Note: I worked in a corrupt industry. Not as corrupt and morally bankrupt as the political world but pretty corrupt nevertheless (though it's really the structure of the industry I worked in which fuels the corruption - just like it does for the rating agencies).
I noticed that many people would preach pragmatism in order to justify and rationalize their selling out. While there are those who feel no need to go through any form of self rationalization (and those people are scary indeed) there are many who need to rationalize in an attempt to justify their actions. When the environment one works in becomes so corrupt many people will rationalize going along as being pragmatic.
I use to wonder how so many relatively good people could sell out. It really puzzled me. However, when I read the following statement one day I started to understand: The mind has the infinite capacity to rationalize. The desire for power and greed can be the lure but our ability to infinitely rationalize for many make those lures irresistible.
