WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democrats are growing more concerned that the Hillary Clinton-Bernie Sanders contest could turn into a months-long nomination fight damaging to the party.
Most believe Clinton will still capture the nomination. But some say she is failing to respond effectively to Sanders. And that could be both fueling his rise and strengthening the Republican argument against her if she is the Democratic candidate in the fall.
The tightening nature of the race hasn't sparked widespread panic among her supporters yet.
But it's worrying some donors, as well as Bill Clinton and their daughter, Chelsea, who shared her concerns at a meeting with supporters in New York. That's according to people close to the campaign, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the private conversations.

They dropped the second line at some point.
My hunch is that Tom Tomorrow's "sensible liberal" cartoons were the reason for the change.

(80,708 posts)Her husband, at least in his prime, was the most preternaturally gifted politician we are likely to see in our lifetimes.
I voted for him twice, I dont think his presidency has aged as well as it could have, specifically some of the now-dated looking decisions, that said the guy just has incredible political chops.
One skill he had in spades back then was, he was a happy warrior (at least, most of the time) he could criticize his enemies and not sound mean doing it. And even if he really wanted to win, he could look chill up on the stump and would end a debate with a smile and a handshake. He never ACTED like he wanted the thing so much that it was gonna make him angry at his opponents.
Compare that to Hillary, clenching her teeth and avoiding Bernie Sanders after the last debate.
And it is indisputable that she doesnt have her husband's raw political abilities. Should she be our nominee, I fear that will be a problem, because I suspect too many of her supporters just think her last name is some magic talisman.
It is not.

(45,251 posts)I could not agree more about Bubba. I also think he is the smartest man I've ever seen. Smartest man, most preternaturally gifted politician, incredibly experienced politician, yet his wife's primary campaigns keep going to bad places.
I can't reconcile all that.

(80,708 posts)It's not even really a secret. I remember hearing noises to that effect back during Bill's first term.
But just because they've been planning and working towards this for a long time, doesn't mean it is a good idea. It doesn't mean the voters will go for it. I know some of the Bush circle have been planning to get Jeb! into the WH for a long time, too, and you see how well that is working out.
One difference there, though, it doesnt feel to me like Jeb! really wants the thing. With Hillary, there is no question that she does.

Who ever thought Dimson would beat Gore and Kerry?
AJH032
(1,124 posts)But let's remember that Bush II ran as a "compassionate conservative" (ie, a moderate), and barely won. The GOP front runners have alienated so much of the U.S. that I honestly think any Dem would beat them just by not being them. It's not the best strategy, I agree. But, it's what I believe to be true.
