2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA big change in CNN’s Iowa polls: Sanders 51-45.
With less than two weeks until the Iowa caucus, Senator Bernie Sanders has opened up an eight-point lead over Hillary Clinton in a newly released CNN poll. Sanders is currently receiving 51% of likely Iowa democratic caucus-goers as Clinton trails with just 43%.
This recent poll shows a massive swing in support for Sanders, as Clinton led in the same poll in December by 18 points. Since then, however, there have been nationally televised debates and Sanders grass-roots fundraising has allowed him to go toe to toe with a Clinton campaign machine that has been on the ground in Iowa since before Thanksgiving.
More recently, Clinton herself has been crisscrossing Iowa speaking at rallies and fundraisers and has been focusing on attacking Sanders health plan which was released last week. Her new message is that Sanders plan is a risky deal, which echoes her statements during the debate when she tried to convince voters that Sanders will completely dismantle the Affordable Care Act.
That message is apparently not resonating with voters in Iowa, as recent polling also shows that more people believe in Sanders proposed single-payer system over Clintons vague assurance that she can make the ACA somehow more affordable to working class voters.
