So, pretty cool thing I eavesdropped on unashamedly -

My kids (well, grown kids) mostly telecommute with their friends over Skype etc. Not many of them even use their cell phone when getting into these conversations, because they like group talk.

Imagine my surprise as I was in the kitchen getting a cup of coffee to hear this. My ears perked. Keep in mind my college kids are 19, 21,23 and 25. All voting age as are their friends:

“What's so bad about being a socialist?” (From a girl in Tx)
“I don't think there's anything wrong with it.” (From Nevada)
Etc. Etc.

Probably a good 12 young people from all over the country talking about socialism. One girl mocking the politicians/media with “Socialism is the boogie man ...woooOOooOOOO. Ok fine, next time you get in a wreck or your house is on fire don't call 911 cause socialism is EBIL!” (Yes she actually pronounced it that way)

I've been coming to DU for a little over 8 years, mostly silent, mostly reading but I've brought my kids in any time I've seen something and shared it with them. They've grown up with DU, my youngest was only 11 when I started coming here. They in turn share it with friends, who then share it with others. I've got reddit kids, skype kids, Imgur kids, Tumblr kids. My kids game, work on site coding, graphics you name it. They blog, online roleplay, connect with others over god knows how many different forms of media. Facebook is so “2010” because moms and dads are on it. They are the poster kids of the internet generation, and the internet generation is mostly open minded and (gasp) socialist! There's a reason that Bernie is dominating the internet this cycle, and it's this generation.

When President Obama won in 2008, I've got newspapers saved that announce it for each of us. When Bernie wins, I'm going to do the same thing. I want my kids to know they, along with all the other plugged in kids, made a difference.

I have experienced the same type of thing with my older son and his friends (though mostly local in this case).
Makes my stress about our future a little easier to bare. There is hope that our kids may actual get it right

I'm 29, and I remember back in high school learning about the McCarthy era and how people were demonized for being "socialist" or *gasp* "communist". Well, most of those lessons were tongue in cheek and quick to point out the ridiculousness of the situation. College just shed the curtain even further. And of course anyone who follows the news or is any bit internationally aware realizes that most countries are much more "socialist" than we are and they're doing just fine. The Times are a-Changin' folks.

And we need them on primary and election days to get Bernie passed the finish line.

Nobody challenges them. So they believe everyone agrees with them. But if you look around the room, you will notice most people rolling their eyes thinking, "not this stupid shit again."

This is her comment -

Apologies in advance if this is too crass but I died laughing.

"If you're on tumblr - or wherever really (we were talking about hate comments, people hating socialism etc... anonymously. Or they attack you for being too main stream - this part is from her as well. I told her she needs to make an account) and you have an anonymous hate message the best way to respond to it is with a stock photo of a woman laughing into her salad with no context. Then afterwards, if they send you more hate, block the user because it will block the IP address and they can't send you anything else. But to them the message sent. They will then typically stalk your page waiting for a response. It's the perfect *blue balls* for haters. Mama, you should do that anytime someone talks hate about socialism."

Congratulations, Mother Of Four. Your post is very encouraging and well timed, for me! Love hearing heart warming news, as I gaze out the window and see ice pellets falling.

I love the fact that my home is noisy and full. I don't know what I'll do when they are all done getting stable and moving out.

I'll cross that bridge when we get to it though, for now I just enjoy it.
