Here’s the Truth About Our Pointless Obsession with Iowa and New Hampshire

If Allen Clifton isn't already under the bus with the rest of us HRC supporters, this will likely earn him a spot.

http://www.forwardprogressives.com/breaking-down-the-stupid-obsession-over-iowa-and-new-hampshire/

Most of this is nothing but a whole lot of hype, with Iowa and New Hampshire easily being the two most hyped states of the entire process. Candidates literally spend months in these states gearing up for these first two presidential primary elections.

Except, it’s mostly pointless.

You see, in the grand scheme of things, these two states have very specific and unique voting demographics that are terrible representations of the American population as a whole. Which means they’re fairly poor predictors as to what the rest of the country thinks about a candidate.

The people who think about the demographics of the states are usually the wonks like us here who are following every turn and twist in the race. The reason the first two are so important is because of the momentum and press attention they provide which can and have completely changed races in the past.

The simple truth is that most voters don't closely follow politics. They pick up bits and pieces from the news or from conversations with people they know. If the news is blasting 'Sanders beats Clinton again!' or 'Clinton holds off Sanders!' headlines for weeks, those headlines have a strong effect on voting intentions.

you'll see this very interesting tidbit.

Barack Obama 2008: Our current president actually lost New Hampshire, won Iowa and ultimately went on to defeat Hillary Clinton, winning a total of 29 states. (Despite what most people think, President Obama actually lost the overall popular vote to Clinton during the 2008 primary.)

I'm not so sure that he's wrong when you look at the other examples he cites. But reasonable people can certainly differ.

And carried that forward. Yeah he lost NH, but just like this race his expectations were different to Clintons.

both candidates throughout the 2008 primary season. Both were very attractive candidates for different reasons. Prez O's appeal carried the day then.

have her hat handed to her in NH and might very well lose Iowa, best to start a narrative where that doesn't mean anything.

...an Iowa or New Hampshire primary vote is greater than my California general election vote - but that's the system we have been given.
