Related: About this forumSuper PAC founded by ESA Fund Against Bernie airing in Iowa
More than $600,000 being spend on ad time in Iowa saying Bernie is "too liberal" for Iowa.
But watching the tv ad - it seems more like an ad that is going to be great for Bernie if you believe his policies are right. Very strange as an attack. I found myself saying "right on" at the end of it!
Surely this can't be the real ad, right?
From the NY Times:
Mr. Ricketts has been a major Republican donor this cycle in the presidential race, but with the ad, his group is injecting itself into the Democratic nominating contest.
When it comes to federal spending and piling on our massive debt, Secretary Clinton is a five-car pile-up, but Senator Sanders is a trainwreck, said Brian Baker, the president of the ESA Fund. Given that Senator Sanders is the leading candidate in Iowa and New Hampshire and way ahead in the general election polls, ESAFund will work hard to inform voters about his record and future plans. Mr. Sanders leads in many head- many national polls.

(3,649 posts)Sure, it might make people upset who already support Republicans, but I can't see it swaying undecideds or Democrats.

(22,913 posts)That looks more like something the old Colbert Report show would have made up. "No more Big Insurance Companies!"
But, but, Americans LOVE Big Insurance companies, don't they? And all that great fee stuff that we all need paid for by taxing the Super Rich? Who could possibly be in favor of that?

(12,685 posts)They'd rather swing the votes to a Republican.
This is the old argument that has been made for years.
Iowa is an open primary. In part it will drive some voters to Clinton and some to Trump which helps knock out Cruz.
Note: I simply don't know how some of you people do it....

(26,549 posts)The ad is intended to keep Republicans going to the Republican caucuses.
The fact that they feel they need to keep "their" voters from crossing over is quite telling.

(11,175 posts)For a right-leaning voter who had the vague impression that Bernie and Hillary were both typical liberal Democrats, this ad would bring home what many of us on DU already know: that Bernie is significantly more progressive than Hillary. It might drive some people to caucus with the Democrats so that they can support Hillary and stop this terrible threat from the left.
They may have been reasoning as you suggest, but if they were, I think they blundered badly.

(26,549 posts)If they're already so anti-liberal, they aren't going to be caucusing for any Democrat. They'd fight the terrible threat from the left by choosing a strong and wonderful Republican (chuckle) to defeat her.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)By contrast, someone who was thinking of caucusing for Sanders, but is convinced by this ad that Sanders is indeed too liberal, won't be swayed to go Republican. Such a voter would be swayed to go to Clinton.
I'm thinking of the voter who's not a dyed-in-the-wool Republican. There are probably a fair number of people who consider themselves to be to the right of Clinton but to the left of all of the Republicans (or at least all who have any chance of winning). Such people might incline to caucus Republican to help stop Trump or Cruz, but this ad will persuade some of them that the more urgent task is to help stop Sanders.
Of course, neither you nor I can drop $600k on pre-caucus advertising, so who are we to question the geniuses behind this ad buy. All we can do is sit here in the bleachers and speculate.

(26,549 posts)The crossover appeal of Sanders is based on being able to tap into the same "the game is rigged!" anger. That isn't necessary anti-liberal.
The problem with this theory is the 30 years spent turning Clinton into Satan incarnate. Don't you remember the "I didn't vote for Clinton....or her husband!" bumper stickers from 1992?
If it was any other Democrat this might work. But Clinton is not any other Democrat. The Republicans have spent 30 years characterizing her as a horrible, elitist, castrating, liberal. I don't see how a Republican would make a strategic vote for someone as loathed as Clinton to fend off Sanders when she's still leading in the national polls.

(10,751 posts)...if I were making that ad, I would at least have raised the bogeyman of "He'll raise taxes on the middle class!".
But they didn't even go there, instead complaining that he would raise taxes on Wall Street, big business and the super rich. Hmmm -- seems to me most of us are all for that!

(10,751 posts)...as far as I can see, it's an epic fail, unless the idea really was to throw more support towards Sanders in an effort to derail Clinton. And if that really was the intent, well all I can say is, be careful what you wish for -- Bernie has shown himself to be a formidable campaigner.
