2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSo what does Obama have to do in the debates?
What does he have to do or avoid doing?
I say, first, do no harm. He's ahead and if he doesn't shoot himself in the foot he should be fine.
I think Mitt's a better debater than he's being given credit for, but he was always at his best when he could appear "presidential" and above the fray as the clear front runner. When he had to go into attack mode, he didn't do as well. His problem is that he's behind and losing ground daily, so appearing "above the fray" isn't going to do anything more than reinforce the status quo.
Thoughts?

(12,286 posts)Regardless of what Pres. Obama does, I'm sure the media will say "wow, Romney stood toe to toe with him" and "it was a draw, which means it's a win for Mitt."
Unless you could get under Mitt's skin and make him ofer another $10,000 bet or something stupid then I predict the media spin will be a Romney win.

(33,497 posts)explain what he has done and what he wants to do in a second term--create jobs, protect medicare and social security. Explain that the GOP has obstructed his agenda since they took over control of the house and senate and indicate that his re-election would be affirmation that the American people wants Washington to cooperate and work on real solutions.

(3,960 posts)And paint Romney as an indecisive candidate with no real firm position on anything other than his own personal gain. Then sack him over the head with the tax returns and how that relates to the 47%.
Of course, Romney will try to trap him, Scot walker or Joe the fake Plummer style. Barack may need a counter trap.

(6,286 posts)and the moderator appeared to be waving him around the other side. McCain did that little hesitation back-and-forth move, like when you are walking and come right up on someone, and neither one of you know which way to move aside, so you end up shuffling back and forth for a second.
After McCain got his bearings, which resulted in his following Obama (who was walking the right way to begin with) McCain poked a little fun at himself with that tongue face and was immortalized.
There's YouTube of it, but I've been working since 7:30a and I'm too lazy to find it right now.

(36,437 posts)Obama believes in what he's doing, and he believes that others can be persuaded that it is the right course of action.
This is what the cynical pundits fail to understand, and it is why Obama is winning handily. The public can tell the difference between cynical one-upmanship and sincerity. Obama is sincere in his program. He will debate, because that's what the American people deserve, a debate on the issues between people espousing different viewpoints. All the political "strategists' on this board and elsewhere are slow in understanding Obama. he doesn't have to "do" anything but debate the issues.
Unlike some, for Obama, a debate is not pure point scoring. It is a legitimate and needed function of the democratic process. The sooner some of the politically cynical understand that, the sooner they will understand why Obama is actually winning the election. Obama, for whatever faults he might have, is an idealist when it comes to democracy and the force of public discourse.

(2,940 posts)But the President is cool and collected, which will, as you say, drive Mitt nuts.
I'm hoping for a full-blown temper-tantrum meltdown from Romney. That would be some good TV.

So where are these gravitas he's supposed to have?
