2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA BIG THANK YOU to the person that filmed/released the 'secret Romeny fundraiser video'
Dear Unknown Mystery Person out there in the world somewhere,
I wish I could tell you how very much I appreciate you filming and releasing that video.
I've been watching all the new polls coming out the past week (especially today) and I am ecstatic.
YOUR video has helped President Obama and the down ticket Democrats immensely.
If I were in your shoes I'd be so excited that I wouldn't be able to sleep, eat, or even sit still.
I'm hoping someday (after you've talked to attorneys) we will eventually know who you are,
so that we can thank you by name!
THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU !!!

(54,414 posts)As one who also met with a presidential candidate for an hour recently (not Romney), I know that filming the event could only have been done by someone who was there. I'm sure that whoever was originally responsible for this film was someone who was a Romney supporter and wanted a souvenir of the event. I would have loved to have a video of the hour I spent with Obama, but there was no way, no how the Secret Service was going to miss someone trying to film the meeting. With Romney, the event was being held in a private home, plus he is not an incumbent president. The security was obviously looser, or else the hidden recorder would have been discovered and shut off.
It's the height of irony, but I'm positive that the person filming the Romney event thought they were doing a good thing, and thought they were releasing it to people who would have nothing but admiration for what they heard (scary as that may be).

(63,912 posts)If the person doing the filming was an admirer of Romney, there would be a disincentive to have it shown to very many people. I can imagine two scenarios off the bat:
1) camera was stolen. Thief realized that the contents of that video could have some value and tried to sell it to a left wing magazine. Mother Jones got the money to buy it.
2) video was proudly shown by its owner to family members, one of whom might be an Obama supporter, who secretly released it to Mother Jones.
As you can see I have a vivid imagination and I love secret plots...

But as to your possibilities, I have one more: someone there was so horrified at this idiot their party had drafted to be its nominee, they leaked it to dampen any possibility he might actually get elected.

(63,912 posts)Romney and what he was saying had taken the video...so I was reacting to that with my fanciful imagination.
As for Cal Peggy and Wine All Mine, please tell me more. Sounds fascinating...
BTW, have you been to Brussels lately? I'll be there in a couple of weeks so I'm interested in some inside info if you have any...(I was there only once before, MANY years ago and don't remember a thing about it).

If we get father afield, we should probably move this to PM
First: Brussels--I haven't been to Brussels for over 5 hours now (i.e. I was there this afternoon!). I'm back in the German Rheinland now, but have to run down to Switzerland tomorrow (there are less pleasant places to "have to" be for work).
Anyway, I'd be happy to help you out if I can. What do you want to know?
Wine All Mine WAS going to be the title of my first novel. It has been re-titled by my agent as "The Time Cellar." It is a totally off the wall plot, but it has a California wine nerd in the year 2010 getting a shot at meeting a retired Thomas Jefferson in the year 1818.

(34,461 posts)Waitstaff working the event? An invited guest who is wealthy but disgruntled or disillusioned?
It's not quite the same, but several friends and I in VA have been deluged with robocalls from Romney's campaign. They apparently are very poor at targeting potential supporters and maybe they just screwed up on the invitations.

(9,269 posts)I think most elections have one--Bush I and the supermarket scanner, Nixon's "five o'clock shadow" at the debates. When my toddler granddaughter gets to high school history class, she'll learn how the "47% tapes" sunk Mittens for good.
After the election I hope he or she comes forward to be recognized and rewarded.
