At 8 p.m. on December 30, 1936, in one of the first sit-down strikes in the United States, autoworkers occupy the General Motors Fisher Body Plant Number One in Flint, Michigan. The autoworkers were striking to win recognition of the United Auto Workers (UAW) as the only bargaining agent for GMs workers; they also wanted to make the company stop sending work to non-union plants and to establish a fair minimum wage scale, a grievance system and a set of procedures that would help protect assembly-line workers from injury. In all, the strike lasted 44 days.
A woman voting will "NEVER, EVER come to pass!!"
http://history.house.gov/Exhibitions-and-Publications/WIC/Historical-Essays/No-Lady/Womens-Rights/
The beginning of the fight for womens suffrage in the United States, which predates Jeannette Rankins entry into Congress by nearly 70 years, grew out of a larger womens rights movement. That reform effort evolved during the 19th century, initially emphasizing a broad spectrum of goals before focusing solely on securing the franchise for women. Womens suffrage leaders, moreover, often disagreed about the tactics for and the emphasis (federal versus state) of their reform efforts. Ultimately, the suffrage movement provided political training for some of the early women pioneers in Congress, but its internal divisions foreshadowed the persistent disagreements among women in Congress and among womens rights activists after the passage of the 19th Amendment.

A president who, helped desegregate public transportation only 5 yrs. before the civil war began.
Chester Arthur represented Elizabeth Jennings Graham in a lawsuit that demanded and won desegregation of NY streecars in 1855. A barely remembered movement drove the effort.
Arthur was VP to James Garfield and took office as president after Garfield was shot. He didn't pursue the nomination to be elected president himself.
Even though he wasn't actually elected president, it's pretty amazing that he would be on a winning ticket at all.
He took office almost 30 yrs. after the court and dirt digging was not as advanced as it is now, so I guess it probably would have been forgotten after 30 yrs.

A president who would become a traitor
After his presidency, John Tyler supported the confederacy and even served in the confederate congress. He died before he could be prosecuted.

(15,728 posts)of. I believe that we are right at the cusp of it happening again, if the public allow it to happen. People have been thinking for so very long that the "government" does not work for them that is why the signs "Keep government out of my Medicare" popped up. The Democratic party has been doing a piss poor job of informing people of all the benefits they get from the government. They only see pot holes, 2 hour waits at federal offices not realizing that the waits are because of the cut backs. I can't blame it all on the Republicans as we have not told people about what the tax cuts have cost the people.

By Max Sawicky
I read Ta-Nehisi Coates. Sometimes I like what I see, but not so much this past week. Im here to take exception to his recent columns on Bernie Sanders and reparations.
In the Hillary vs. Bernie civil war, we often attack each other on spurious grounds. Youre just looking for a job. Youre corrupt in ways multifarious. Youre ____splaining. Please. The objective of politics is to encourage people to voluntarily and happily come around to your own view on what is to be done. Browbeating is counterproductive. At the end of this little adventure, we all have to get behind blocking a Republican from the presidency, and the ensuing barbarism. I have nothing bad to say about Ta-Nehisi Coates the person, and you shouldnt either. Lets get to the meat and potatoes.
Ill start with his basic case for reparations. Exhibit A is the big, justly praised essay in The Atlantic. I will stipulate that the fact of a debt of the United States to African-Americans is incontrovertible. Reading the essay made me more convinced of that than before. Whether that justifies trashing Sanders is a different matter.
