Related: About this forum"Buyer's Remorse" A book that criticizes President Obama endorsed by Sanders
As a democrat who is proud of President Obama, I find Sanders' recommendation of the book displayed clearly on its cover to be rather offensive. It seems to be a recommendation from Sanders the Independent, and not Sanders the Democrat who is vying to become the leader of our party and the successor of President Obama and his legacy.

(1,215 posts)And the title is kind of misleading. Press is saying Obama made a mistake by not harnessing the power of his supporters to get things done.

(11,546 posts)Bill Press makes the case why, long after taking the oath of office, the next president of the United States must keep rallying the people who elected him or her on behalf of progressive causes. That is the only way real change will happen. Read this book. - Bernie
Must KEEP rallying - so evidently he believes that Obama has done at least SOME rallying. Also - I agree with Press. Obama has not lived up to all of the progressive promises - but that's not to say that Obama is some kind of progressive failure. Anyway, Bernie's quote is being taken out of context here.

(3,687 posts)(if implemented) TPP is the worst of it but there are other problems also.
Mostly Obama checked out and started trying to appease the fascists rather than use his early political capital and his motivated base.
I expect Hillary to do the same.

Showing that like his supporters, Bernie also engages in magical thinking. The People go back to their jobs after the election. If they weren't going to stay in election mode and march on the capital for Obama, they won't do it for Bernie. Though we'll never know as Bernie will never be POTUS.

(73,559 posts)Thanks for this -- now I know what book I'll buy next. I say this as a person who campaigned for Barack Obama in both 2008 and 2012, and who has been pleased with many of his accomplishments. Likewise, there are areas where I've been disappointed.
I also like Bill Press, and appreciate that his book isn't "anti-Obama." More, the Sanders quote is absolutely on target!

(4,961 posts)How quickly people forget Bill Press' book "The Obama Hate Machine" where he really did slam rightwing and mainstream media for their hate speech against Obama.
As a Democrat who is proud of President Obama, I have felt disillusioned by some of the policies endorsed by Obama - especially in the early years - in his quest for bipartisan uniter. His search for the "Grand Bargain" which thank goodness was rejected by Republicans, horrified many real progressives in Congress as well as progressive voters - would have included reducing Social Security through the chained CPI, increasing the Retirement Age, decreasing corporate taxes significantly, and the lack of using his bully pulpit for the Public option - giving powerful drug lobbyists a seat at the healthcare table. As a candidate, Obama ran an ad targeting the industry's chief lobbyist, former Louisiana congressman Billy Tauzin, and the role Tauzin played in preventing Medicare from negotiating for lower drug prices. After election - he secured an agreement from the White House that they would not overturn the very Medicare drug policy Obama campaigned against.
And don't get me started on candidate Obama renegotiating NAFTA and CAFTA to . . . President Obama and the TPP.
We are constantly told we are the best country because we can dare to speak out against policies advocated by our leaders that we don't agree with. But somehow this book is offensive because it does just that.
Bernie Sanders quote: "Bill Press makes the case why, long after taking the oath of office, the next president of the United States must keep rallying the people who elected him or her on behalf of progressive causes. That is the only way real change will happen. Read this book" is neither offensive or outrageous. And it is very much what many of us Democrats (big D) and democrats (small d) believe is what our country needs.
This outrage by people is so over-the-top. But I guess is that's the best thing they can think of to throw against the wall against Sanders - it just shows how Sanders' "scandals" are pretty damn mild.

Obama gave the impression to everyone that all of his donations were from regular people and thus he would be responsive primarily to the people. He kept quiet about all his donations from big companies, and we had to wait until after election day to have the first glimpse as to who was the real Obama.

Bernie won't do that to us. Hillary will put the pedal to the metal if she gets the nod. Book it!

(68,918 posts)I criticize President Obama too. I'm not a blind follower. I didn't know one had to agree with everything a sitting president says to be part of the same platform. I mean, after all, didn't Teddy Kennedy challenge Carter?
