If Bernie wins, he won't wear a tux to the inaugural ball because it's a symbol of "class privilege"

If Bernie Sanders wins the presidency, don’t expect him to go all out for the celebration. In an interview with Good Morning America on Monday, he told Robin Roberts not even the inaugural ball would be a tuxedo-worthy occasion for a man who campaigns on fixing wealth inequality. “I’ve probably got myself in a lot of trouble right now and my wife disagrees with me, no doubt, but a tux is kind of a symbol of class privilege,” the Vermont senator said.

Is that kind of like being photographed with Kissinger? (I don't know; I've never done that, either.)

Why would you even DO such a thing? I've gotten the impression at DU that NOTHING and NOBODY justifies the degradation of taking on any of the trappings of such vulgar excess, not to mention the symbolism of grinding the masses into the mud.

Did you immediately sell the garments and give the proceeds to the nearest homeless person, and then steam clean yourself?

I am breathless to know the details.

73. Bated breath or baited breath? Worm couture? Some fun facts about snapping turtles:
Mon Feb 1, 2016, 09:13 PM
Feb 2016
Alligator snapping turtle

The alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) is one of the heaviest freshwater turtles in the world,[3] having been recently proven outweighed by the Hoan Kiem Turtle, a giant softshell turtle. It is often associated with, but not closely related to, the common snapping turtle, which is in the genus Chelydra. The specific epithet temminckii is in honor of Dutch zoologist Coenraad Jacob Temminck.[4]

***

The inside of the turtle's mouth is camouflaged, and it possesses a vermiform (literally, "worm-shaped&quot appendage on the tip of its tongue used to lure fish, a form of Peckhamian mimicry. The turtle hunts by lying motionless in the water with its mouth wide open. The vermiform tongue imitates the movements of a worm, luring prey to the turtle's mouth. The mouth is then closed with tremendous speed and force, completing the ambush.

Contrary to claims that alligator snapping turtles possess one of the strongest bite forces of any animal, it has been recorded at 158 ± 18 kgf (1,550 ± 180 N; 348 ± 40 lbf), which is lower than several other species of turtles and at about the same level as humans, relative to the turtle's body size.[16][17] Still, these turtles must be handled with extreme care and considered potentially dangerous.[14] This species can bite through the handle of a broom and rare cases have been reported where human fingers have been cleanly bitten off by the species.[18] No human deaths have been reported to have been caused by alligator snapping turtles.

Totally awesome critter, I had the pleasure of meeting one face to face as it was dining in a deer carcass. It hissed like a demon and I paddled my ass out of there in a hurry. For some reason I was reminded of the encounter when I first read your post.

Yet you said you felt you did. At least at this point you;re not pretending I made that up, so that's a nice change in your story. First you didn't need it, now you did? Interesting stuff.

I said I gave my gowns away, I also gave most of my other dress clothes and shoes away because I didn't need them. I wear jeans to work now.

This is getting more and more bizarre.

People give away things they say they don't need, that doesn't mean they couldn't have lived without them.

Obama probably owns a tux and I'm sure Michelle has a few couture gowns, do they need them?

You aren't an it-getter, are you? Either that or you're making up shit to try to make me look entitled.

I do "get t" you just posted an edit to make me look like a liar? You clearly communicated you felt at one time you needed couture. If you misspoke- own it- but don't try and misrepresent what you did say :barf:
Done with your blatant dishonestly.

105. I haven't worn couture in years, bettyellen. I prefer jeans and flannel now.

I gave my gowns away a long time ago because I didn't need them anymore.

Is that what you wanted to know? You should have just asked.

If I edit it's usually for clarity, you're acting like I said I had to have those gowns.

What a truly bizarre exchange.

You really are desperate, you came into this thread to attack me and haven't let up. I have no idea what I said to upset you but you should really calm down. It's disturbing.

An inaugural ball should be a people's event. It shouldn't be about snobbery and exclusivity.

I seriously doubt that people would only vote for a Democrat if that Dem was in favor of formality.

(BTW, it's fairly unlikely that HRC would wear a tux, either).

There are as many micro-agressions like this against the lower classes as there are against all our social minorities.

Nice to see him walking the walk. Haven't been this period of a candidate's wardrobe choices since Obama refused to wear the flag pin, which I viewed as perhaps the ultimate symbol of Bush-era false patriotism.

United States presidential inaugural balls
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

United States presidential inaugural balls are large social gatherings, both white tie and black tie, held to celebrate the commencement of a new term of the President of the United States. Planned and sanctioned by the Presidential Inaugural Committee, the official inaugural balls occur throughout the evening of Inauguration Day in the Washington D.C. area and are invitation-only, attended by guests who are issued pre-paid tickets. The President, First Lady, Vice-President and his spouse, all make personal appearances at each of the inaugural balls held in their honor. Catered food, beverages, and live entertainment performed by national and globally acclaimed musicians are provided at the inaugural balls.

Other inaugural balls, unofficial and often less formal that occur before and on Inauguration Day, are given by state societies, businesses, and private organizations.

so investing in one extra suit for, I'd hope, 8 years really wouldn't be that much of a symbol of class privilege. Not compared with having honor guards, helicopters, country retreats and so on at your disposal.
