For the first time in my adult life, I'm afraid our democracy might not survive this election

Thinking about tonight's caucuses, I found myself rooting for Ted Cruz (because I want Trump to suffer a defeat). But of course Cruz as the general election candidate is scary. Especially with a Republican congress.

I imagine that Cruz as president would appoint and promote a bunch of people who believe we should all live under biblical law. That's terrifying.

But Trump has already shown us he approves of paramilitary violence against all kinds of dissenters. He spoke approvingly today of Swedish masked mobs attacking immigrant children. I don't think he'd be able to marshal the military (immediately) because I believe there is a culture in the armed forces of respecting civilian rule. (I know, lots of exceptions, but bear with me.)

I do think Trump could find support with police departments, however. And he would encourage all kinds of armed right-wingers.

And that is truly frightening.

Plus, Rubio's scary because he could put a benign face on terrible policies.

I miss Romney.

I was kind of outraged in 2004 that the previous four years hadn't already proven the point that Bush needed to go. And I was also around for Reagan II. But Trump seems even scarier.

(Of course, he could lose and America could redeem itself; but we'll always know how close we came.)

It can only be revived at this point. Doing more of the same leads to as sure a death as we'll experience under Trump, just delayed.
