2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHRC's got nothing to gloat about here.
She blew what should have been an unloseable thirty-point lead in Iowa in three months...scoring a coin-flip "win" at best...even with the full backing of Tom Harkin.
She and her supporters aren't entitled to throw shade at anybody today.

Of course, that should favor Hillary.

(10,476 posts)think they are the bellweather of the nation in a procedure that isn't even an actual vote. Why should there be coin tosses? Why should O'Malley's voters be told "sorry, not viable!" and instructed to support another candidate?
Both the caucus system and the rigid state voting order (I am from NH and would have no qualms about losing our #2 spot) are antiquated throwbacks that need to be scrapped.

At least we don't have to hear the Trump crow. Cruz ... wince ... will have to do.

(15,951 posts)a win is a win and if all the votes are counted and Hillary got more votes then she won. I consider that Iowa is a neutral state. It is a state where both Hillary and Bernie had a potential of doing well. 1) as a caucus state Hillary as the front-runner should have had a clear organizational edge 2) It is a state which has a high level of students and white liberals--both categories that favor Bernie.
The one thing that Iowa did for Bernie is that by coming so close to winning it will solidify his large lead in NH, a neighboring state to Vermont, and a state where he is well liked and will win easily. I don't think that Hillary will be able to take a 0.3 victory in Iowa and suddenly turn NH around--though in 2008 she did manage to take a third place showing in Iowa and overcome Obama in the NH polls to win--I don't see that happening this time.
Now Clinton supporters and the establishment would really get nervous if Bernie came this close or won in a state like South Carolina. To be the nominee he is going to have to demonstrate that he can take some of those southern states which have 1) more African-American voters as opposed to lily white voters and 2) perhaps somewhat less liberal democrats. He will also have to demonstrate he can win some of the big Industrial states like PA, NJ, OH, IL, MI.
If he can do that he will truly have thrown Team Hillary off their stride and could perhaps even win the nomination. But a near-win in Iowa and an expected win in a neighboring state like NH won't do it.

(15,951 posts)he deserves credit. Iowa was a tailored made state for him--it often has backed people who bucked the establishment: McGovern, Carter in '76 (he was not the establishment candidate when he first ran), Obama. He deserves credit for coming so close.

She spent a life-time earning the best resume, ever...got stuck in a tie.
She dominated the coin-tosses... got stuck in a tie.
Worst of all, she actually has a lead in an historically close primary, and that's a W gaddamit!... and all the anti-Clinton people see it as stuck in a tie! Please note, if you see this as a tie you are anti-Clinton

(1,835 posts)She had the backing of Harkin and almost every other Democratic pol in the state. More money, more organization, more of everything.
Her supporters here think it is smart, practical politics to disrespect Democratic ideals and those who support them. Many Clinton supporters have never cared for the left wing of the Party and all they want is their votes in return for being "the lesser of two evils."

(5,648 posts)True story.
I hope they have two TV stations by now and, with modern communications, that they don't still show TV shows and sports contests which are two weeks old which are brought over on tape by boat. It was fun to watch a game with a new guy who didn't know the game had already been played and bet with him on the result. I can still remember the TV station's morning sign on, "Guam is good, and so is Tinian, and so is Saipan..." I
also remember the little motel run by Japanese folks, normally inhabited by Japanese tourists, where my feet stuck out over the end of the bed. And the sudden rain storms with rain drops the size of pennies which were followed by sunshine a few minutes later. And the moisture in the air. The great scuba diving....
Ah, the memories, thankfully mostly only the good ones remain.
