AFSCME President Lee Saunders issued the following statement on the results of the 2016 Iowa Caucus:
Last night in Iowa, we saw proof of two things: AFSCMEs boots on the ground make a difference for candidates who stand with working people, and Hillary Clinton is the best candidate to restore the middle class, fix our unbalanced economy, and ensure we strengthen unions to strengthen America.
AFSCME public service workers are proud to have made a crucial difference in last nights results. AFSCME Iowa Council 61 is the largest public service workers union in the state and the efforts of our members there helped push Secretary Clinton to victory last night. Entrance polling shows that Secretary Clinton won union households 52-43 over Sen. Bernie Sanders, and 21 percent of caucus goers last night came from union households. That is a testament to the work AFSCME put in on the ground for months in this campaign. Hundreds of AFSCME volunteers knocked on more than 8,000 doors, engaged in more than 11,000 one-on-one conversations with members, and put in more than 1,000 volunteer shifts for the campaign during our GOTC program.

(115,836 posts)I guess you can call it a technical victory, but she was supposed to have won by a huge margin and didn't. Iowa didn't help her a bit, but it gave Bernie a whole lot of momentum nobody expected him to get, least of all the corporate media. But they are noticing now, and regardless of that .2%, Bernie has the wind behind him now.

(90,793 posts)Okay, that would be working people: check. That would be people who are or aspire to be middle class: check. That would be people who have good (or at least adequate) job benefits and would like to have them protected: check. That would be people who want others to have the same: check.
And they volunteered for Hillary, caucused for her, and voted for her. Nice.
I know AFSCME. I worked at both the University and the County during times of union organization. In both cases my personal job was excluded from collective bargaining, but you better believe I am pro-Union.

(42,862 posts)Whether it was "unions don't matter" or "only the leaders endorsed her" or "members feel differently" (blah blah blah) it's clear that the machinery, network and volunteers that come along with union endorsements REALLY DO matter.
"...we saw proof (that)...Hillary Clinton is the best candidate to restore the middle class, fix our unbalanced economy, and ensure we strengthen unions to strengthen America."
Really? What is it that constitutes "proof".

(34,661 posts)Thank you Union brothers and sisters for getting your members and any other Democrats to the Caucus's. That is what counts, could give a rip as to were the votes fell, what was important is our Party Members being engaged in the process. This is how one gets involved, and thy will be at the Polls in November. We have a least two great Candidates doing their thing, and getting people interested in what is the National Debate as to the what where and how this country goes forward.

(45,120 posts)and tickled pink. 0.2% and 6 coin tosses is what Hillary won by. 0.2% and 6 coin tosses. One year ago she was at 68% and Bernie was at 7%, last night Hill was ahead and won by 0.2% and 6 coin tosses. Imagine that. 0.2% and 6 coin tosses. That is fucking awesome.

(12,778 posts)Yeah, that'll restore the middle class, alright.
A $12.00 minimum wage will restore the middle class, alright.
Health care people can't afford to use will restore the middle class.
Yep. Sure it will. Uh huh.
