(2,450 posts)The reparations thing ... Okay. Whatever. It's a non issue to me in terms of the election. It's a distraction because all the candidates are against reparations, but only one person is being criticized. Obama is against them as well, it's a standard position.
But this man in the video is wrong about framing American slavery (chattel slavery) as a global problem. The type of slavery we engaged in and the way we did it was distinct and unique to America. Its effects have been different than anywhere else and there is a direct correlation between then and now. The structural racism we have today is because of slavery, the ripple effect is still going, it's not over.This is accepted fact, any honest historian and sociologist will tell you.
I do agree with him about the solutions though. We have to deal with an unlevel playing field, deal with structural racism and get justice and equality for poc.
American slavery was (is) disgraceful. Period.
