I'm not angry. I'm amused at the irony of DU'ers who called a lot of us "cult followers" over the last 7 years.

It's not his to control, the movement is bottom up, it requires self-policing. But it must've got bad if it made its way to him to the point where he had to say something (clearly his response was to acknowledge it rather than dismiss it and say it didn't exist; so he has had to have been notified that it could come up).

I personally think it was kept from him for as long as possible.

It reminds me of 2004, when strong Dean supporters scared off people receptive to his candidacy with bullying tactics in the social media world. The campaign was unsure what to do because they wanted to encourage passionate support, but many took it way too far. I'd hate to see something similar happen to Sanders.

Friendster was the largest platform (which is where Dean made inroads). So it wasn't that bad at all. I've woken up every day face palming at some of the crap the Reddit Sanders group says or does. I've gotten to a point where if I read any article on Sanders on news sites I skip the comments because someone somewhere is going to say something stupid. Oh, and don't get me started on all the endorsements which we should just congratulate and move on rather than do a pile on on the endorser.

And comment sections. Particularly as at the time a lot of news orgs just let them be unmoderated for the most part. More people were starting to look online for news, particularly in election coverage, so it was definitely one of those early phases of what we're seeing now.

Obviously, social media has evolved massively since 2003-2004, but there are lessons to be learned.

News organizations are looking for clicks, and leaving the comment sections open is a great way to drive repeat traffic.

I watched it happen at Dem party event in Georgia. Some people were a little apprehensive in leaving the building because of how aggressive (bullies) the Dean people were. This is why I have no patience for these Sanders followers.

It was a big decision for me. And the obnoxious reply I got from one of his supporters all because I dared to suggest we Democrats are in this together. Because who the f*ck truly believes they live in a bubble??!!?!
