Related: About this forumWhat Albright said was: "There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other."
This is a quote that she has been saying for many many years.
For example:
Theres a special place in hell for women who dont help each other.
Amen sister. I couldnt agree more to this. Sometimes I think I help other women out to the possible detriment of my own business (spending more time on their business than my own) but Im convinced it will come back to me at some point, and investing in relationships is sooooo important.

There are not enough women in power. Why are there so few women in power? Men.
There arent enough qualified women in the world? Thats the most bullshit thing Ive ever heard.
Theres a special place in hell for women who dont help each other.

This is something she has been saying for a long time with respect to women.

(7,290 posts)Given the context in which she said it this time, it's wrong.

(57,349 posts)We're not stupid, we know exactly what she meant: we're traitors if we don't support the woman.

(2,125 posts)That was a dealbreaker for me too. How revolting. That's not being tough, it's being inhuman.

(1,788 posts)It's not like the first time it's ever been heard. And the funny thing, if she supported Bernie, she probably would have done a revised version of it....because, you know, she's kinda famous for said quote.

She fucked up and so did Steinem, they're shilling for Hillary and tanking their feminist cred by disparaging women who support Bernie.

People can spin that however they would like, but I am doing no spinning whatsoever.

(70,242 posts)Lets get this Albright story right
2 things:
First: Many are quoting the headline of Guardian-"Albright: 'special place in hell' for women who don't support Clinton"-which was wrong--trying to sensationalize the story I suspect
The actual story says---
**** Theres a special place in hell for women who dont help each other!
So the OP out in gd-p (think there are several) misquotes Albright's quote.*************
Also Point # 2
NOTE***the title of the Guardian contradicts the actual story!!
This was the headline from the Guardian:
Albright: 'special place in hell' for women who don't support Clinton

Former secretary of state Madeleine Albright introduced Hillary Clinton at an event in New Hampshire on Saturday, telling the crowd and voters in general: Theres a special place in hell for women who dont help each other!..............
Also--the context of the quote was abortion rights and the upcoming SC nominees:
....Albright was the first woman to be secretary of state and served during the presidency of Clintons husband, Bill. She closed her New Hampshire speech with an allusion to the ongoing struggle with Republicans over abortion rights.
Young women have to support Hillary Clinton. The story is not over! she said. Theyre going to want to push us back. Appointments to the supreme court make all the difference.
Its not done and you have to help. Hillary Clinton will always be there for you. And just remember, theres a special place in hell for women who dont help each other..................

(15,189 posts)You think just because she didn't mention HilLIARy's name after that quote it somehow was misquoted. She meant it if we don't support HilLIARy we're going to hell. More smoke and mirrors.

(13,877 posts)All says the same...such nit-picking...She's Talking About Women Going to Hell for Not Voting For Hillary. Good Lord.
This woman is unhinged...and I could care less how many times she has said it before. That even makes it worse. She must have already been to Hell to know all this detail. Special Place? Do tell.
riversedge
(70,242 posts)the Guardian headline--which was NOT what Albright said. And also Albright was referring to supporting women with the abortion issue. She believes Hillary is the one that cause (this we can disagree on I suspect)
libdem4life
(13,877 posts)Her woman, no less.
Oh, and Hillary does not own the abortion issue. It's a Democratic Party position and subterfuge in this context. Do you think Bernie is against abortions/choice? Please. Stay relevant.
She has her opinion, which we all do. My opinion about her opinion is that she royally screwed up, regardless of how it is parsed and justified...(by Democrats?)

(6,115 posts)Immediately before the paragraph you quoted. The headline sort of combines the two. Certainly stronger statement than you are trying to make it.

(58,724 posts)The story is not over, theyre going to want to push us back. Appointments to the Supreme Court make all the difference, Albright said of Republicans, adding that young women have to help and that Hillary Clinton will be there for you.

(12,471 posts)In the last NY State election for governor, Andrew Cuomo was primaried by a woman, Zephyr Teachout. Even though Teachout surprisingly garnered more than 30% of the vote in the primary, Clinton did not endorse the woman, she endorsed the man.
Teachout's policies are much more liberal than Cuomo's and she was virtually an unknown when she ran in the primary.
Now Teachout is running for Congress in the 19th CD in NY. She is a supporter of Sanders as well. This district could go either way.
Now I ask why Clinton did not support her in the primary, and whether or not Dr. Senator Secretary Clinton will endorse Teachout in the current election.
Did Clinton not support Teachout because she is "too liberal," or was it because she was not part of the vast Democratic machine here in NY? If she endorses Teachout is it because of Clinton's well known "evolution" or are there other reasons?

(58,724 posts)But it is a quote she has been using for a long time. The idea that women should help other women is one that she has been promoting for many years.

(7,231 posts)For instance, helping a woman stuck in the 20th century can be done two ways:
a) unstick the woman and drag her into the 21st century, kicking and screaming if need be.
b) endulge the woman to get her everything she wants, only so she can then work to the detriment of millions of other women - just because she is one of the last women on earth unwilling to contemplate 21st century solutions for 21st century problems.
I'm going with option a, Maddy. What about you?

(35,015 posts)When and how she uses that phrase is the most important part here - saying it in support of Hillary was a huge mistake and only pissed off a hell of a lot of women, including me.
Hillary's campaign can't take it back, and you won't convince anyone it was a harmless comment.

(22,336 posts)Maybe they're angry that she's campaigning for Hillary?
Either Hillary or Bernie as president will be good for women.
Sarah Palin would not be good for women as president, despite being a woman.
I am not going to decide whom to vote for based on abortion because they have the exact same position on it. I'm voting for Bernie because I agree with him more often in areas where the two candidates don't agree. Specifically, trade agreements. I've lived through one and saw how it hurt the area where I lived.
My decision is not based on who is good for women because they're both good for women. But I don't see this campaign statement as being a big deal.
