Just offering some suggestions for the Democratic Party Platform, according to many "realists" who don't believe in Rainbows and Unicorns.

(7,412 posts)As far as proposed policy and legislation anything is possible. Anything that is possible can also be unlikely at the same time. The current and projected House of Representatives and Senate for the next few cycles makes most proposals from ANY candidate on either side unlikely. Bat shit crazy Republican proposals won't get 60 votes in the Senate anytime soon and Democratic "rainbows and unicorns" won't get through a Republican House or a Senate with less than 60 Democratic seats.
Congress is the giant funnel all these ideas and proposals filter through and a Democratic House combined with 60+ Senate seats most likely won't be possible until at least the 2022 or 2024 election cycles at the earliest (and the House depends on redistricting after the 2020 Census). Single Payer Healthcare and free college tuition are great ideas. Will they pass Congress in the next 4-6 years? I'd bet every dime I have they would not.

(47,803 posts)The point is not to pass them in the next 4-6 years. No Democrat is getting anything passed.
The point is to bring back the massive number of disaffected voters, and actually get that Democratic Congress instead of maintaining the gridlock.
You don't get that Democratic Congress by saying "No, we can't".

(26,549 posts)Sanders is quite open that he will need a lot of people working to achieve these goals. Not "I will magically make this happen when I'm in office".
That would be Clinton's promises. Like her claim that she will expand the ACA, despite Congress voting to kill it. Again.

(9,610 posts)Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

(40,416 posts)Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
One of my faves.
The first stanza is especially great. "The centre cannot hold"
And "slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?"
Thanks for the inspiration.

(3,687 posts)For you kids that are too young National Lampoon did this parody of "Desiderata" an early 19th century poem that make me gag in 1972 ! I preferred the parody below - I even had a poster of it next to my black-light of Hendrix!
here's the whole story if you're interested: http://dmdb.org/lyrics/deteriorata.html
"Deteriorata" - National Lampoon
You are a fluke of the universe. You have no right to be here.
Deteriorata. Deteriorata.
Go placidly amid the noise and waste,
And remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.
Avoid quiet and passive persons, unless you are in need of sleep.
Rotate your tires.
Speak glowingly of those greater than yourself,
And heed well their advice, even though they be turkeys.
Know what to kiss, and when.
Consider that two wrongs never make a right, but that three do.
Wherever possible, put people on hold.
Be comforted that in the face of all aridity and disillusionment,
and despite the changing fortunes of time,
There is always a big future in computer maintenance.
Remember The Pueblo.
Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle, and mutilate.
Know yourself. If you need help, call the FBI.
Exercise caution in your daily affairs,
Especially with those persons closest to you -
That lemon on your left, for instance.
Be assured that a walk through the ocean of most souls
Would scarcely get your feet wet.
Fall not in love therefore. It will stick to your face.
Gracefully surrender the things of youth: birds, clean air, tuna, Taiwan.
And let not the sands of time get in your lunch.
Hire people with hooks.
For a good time, call 606-4311. Ask for Ken.
Take heart in the bedeepening gloom
That your dog is finally getting enough cheese.
And reflect that whatever fortune may be your lot,
It could only be worse in Milwaukee.
You are a fluke of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not,
The universe is laughing behind your back.
Therefore, make peace with your god,
Whatever you perceive him to be - hairy thunderer, or cosmic muffin.
With all its hopes, dreams, promises, and urban renewal,
The world continues to deteriorate.
Give up!
