Silver lining tonight: Romney's debate expectations are thru the roof now.

He cannot do anything else but replicate tonight's performance or it's a loss. All the President needs to do is improve and show more fire which is a lower bar.

This doesn't mean President can have the same performance. He needs to show fire and passion as if he realizes he could lose his job. The closing statement was just horrendous which is inexcusable since that is the one part you should have memorized and practiced in advance. He could have easily made debate a draw off of that.

I'd also be wary of Biden next week. Ryan has no debate skills to speak of and Biden will bring the fire he couldn't bring last time against Palin since she was a woman. He can easily blunt any momentum, assuming Romney gets some out of this performance which we'll see in the polls over next few days.

I don't get it - why do you think Biden (a) had no fire in '08 and (b) held back in any way because he was debating a woman?

Regarding tonight - I hope you're right. I also hope the lies Rmoney spewed come back to bite him. It's getting a bit late in the campaign to change your story on what your policies have been since last year.

Also... were there "zingers?" I didn't notice many. Looks like that was a false rumor - he'd clearly been rehearsing his lies rather than his zingers...

It's the reason Scott Brown is in some trouble in MA because of how he's aggressively going after Warren.

Biden had fire in 2008 but it could not come off as towards Palin. He had to treat her with kid gloves a bit. It worked, they let her implode on herself.

He'll be freed from those shackles this year and can go after Ryan with some gusto without being labeled a bully or condescending. He can do the same with Romney's policies.

I think people will stop TAKING THINGS FOR GRANTED now.

Too many people both here and elsewhere have been running around lately claiming Mitt would have his ass handed to him and we had nothing to worry about.

Some college students I know who were going to vote for Obama said they didn't need to bother showing up to vote because Obama 'has it in the bag' etc.

PLUS don't forget we have GOP operatives already caught being involved in electoral fraud.

This will remind people that they need to work until Election Day.

No more triumphant threads saying "Mitt will be gone for good after Nov. 6.' etc.

Now the GOP big money guys will still be wasting their money on Romney instead of dumping him tomorrow and spending their money on the down ticket candidates.

I just hope they don't go down as a result of the debate.

I hope Obama can get back in the game. They've run a very good campaign so far.

But after tonight, I think Biden, Obama and the rest of the debate team will presumably be much better-prepared for the rest of the debates and have a better game prepared.
