2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumToday's Meeting
I attended an afternoon meeting with a handful of people from the Democratic Party and the Democratic Left. As might be expected, part of the discussion centered upon the Democratic primary contest. Of particular interest, of course, was last nights debate.
One gentleman -- who is of my generation -- began discussing the outfit that Hillary Clinton wore last night. A young man, who is a college student, cut that discussion off quickly. He supports Bernie Sanders, he said, but not because he didnt respect Hillary Clinton. In fact, he said that he hoped everyone would be respectful enough to not think of outfits and the like as campaign issues.
Everyone agreed that he was correct.
This young generation! There are a lot of powerful agents of change there!

There were people who got worked up about Gandhi's clothing. But, I do think the color likely caught people's attention last night. Let's hope that they focused on one of the candidates talking about a Gandhi-like program for this nation!

(23,156 posts)What Hillary is wearing should never be a topic of conversation.
The advantage men have is that they really have a "uniform" and so long as they wear that, no one seems to pay very much attention to their clothes.
We can all help to elevate the discussion. And that means making things ugly and vicious.
Even with the "other side" (from both/either side) appear to be attempting to incite, either avoid them, or use humor. That can be difficult, at times .....especially when the republican investigators are documenting that Bernie wasn't really Bernie -- he was the brother of the guy who replaced Paul in the Beatles, circa 1966. In reel life, Paul and Bernie were burning one on Penny Lane, and .....well, everyone knows now.

(23,867 posts)That is free communication without the ego. Wonderful.
We're all going to have personal stories. I'm touching bases with a right wing cousin. We'll see.
So the youth have had independent information and communication through multiple avenues their entire lives. I grew up climbing almond trees and making tunnels out of mustard weeds in the field. Maybe we'll see a large youth turnout for Bernie. It's sounding that way. Viral Bernie.
And it's the sum-total of these personal accounts, across the country, that are beginning to bring a new and different type of change about.

(73,603 posts)I supported Hillary twice for the Senate. I was glad to do so, and have no regrets. I wish that she had voted differently on Iraq, but accept that is one area -- an important one, at that -- which I have very different values than her.
I fully support Bernie. Yet, as I've stated, I will support our party's nominee.
I have met Hillary twice. Although it has nothing to do with my opinion of her as a politician, I found her to be an attractive lady in person. I prefer her in person, with a very small group, to her on tv, in front of a large audience. And, even in the context of campaigning, I think that very few politicians are really comfortable engaging init. And I don't trust 90% of those who are comfortable, anyhow. I like authenticity.

(30,099 posts)b/c should she win the nomination I don't want her to lose the WH.
It will have to sustain me, you get what you get sometimes.
Right now I work for Sanders until the end.

(73,603 posts)Bill O'Reilly just opined that Bernie Sanders may well be another Fidel or Che. They didn't admit to being authoritarian commies until after they gained power.
Yikes!
Maybe we need to re-think this? Is Bernie ....DANGEROUS?????
