2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumNot that it matters but Jonathan Capehart has earened a permanent place under my bus
I used to like him. Not the best pundit out there, but credible and interesting in a conventional wisdom kind of way.
But his latest stunt at working for what seems to be the Clinton/Brock Swiftboating machine has placed him on my own personal shit list. Him going out and breathlessly pushing a totally meaningless -- but harmful -- smear about absolutely nothing about a decades -old photograph to cast doubt on Sanders commitment to civil rights .
I know, if its so meaningless why are you upset.?
There is something about it that so crystallizes what is wrong about our politics as practiced by certain candidates. A contest of competing ideas? Bring it on.
But to try and misrepresent someone who has dedicated his life to social and economic justice based on whether a particular photograph of an event he was clearly at was him or someone who looked like him? Jeezus. That's foul, and indicates a lack of a moral center.
It's Hillary... it's how she is

this obvious lie by capehart, while never mentioning his conflict of interest is embarrassing for all dems

(3,335 posts)Your opinion of Capeheart doesn't matter. Funny, last night, Bernie's spokesman was stating in that same interview that the Bernie campaign had never said or implied that the picture was of Bernie Sanders. If he didn't know for sure, he should have just said that. Instead, he acknowledged that their campaign had taken steps to remove any indication that they were making the claim that THAT photo was of Bernie Sanders. It would seem that if Bernie's campaign had time to change their website, than they certainly would have had time to pose the question to Bernie, "Is that you or not?"

(39,961 posts)Daniel Lyons - The man that TOOK the photo says it is Bernie Sanders, and offers up around 6 more at the same CORE convention of ... Bernie Sanders.
I guess this isn't Bernie Sanders, and the one who took the photo said it was:
I guess this isn't Bernie Sanders, either:
Ask the photographer whether or not ... you know, the person that took the picture in the first place whether he took pictures of Bernie Sanders, Bruce Rappaport, or maybe it was of a pink elephant running away from King Kong.
If the person that took the photo is not a good enough reference for you, then I have no idea what to say.

It would be funny at this point how many odd, obscure "scandals" they keep trying to make stick, if it wasn't so damn important to elect the best Democratic candidates we can.

(5,252 posts)identified the guy in the photo as John Rappaport, and is writing his second article in 2 days about it. At the same time, there's an article going around written by the author that states it's Bernie.
Whatever the case, this is the most idiotic story.
What a piece of crap!
JDPriestly
(57,936 posts)took this and a number of other pictures of Bernie at the same meeting on the same day has affirmed that the young man in the photo speaking at the meeting is Bernie.
Case closed.
It is very, very important to let the media and others know that the man in that photo is very clearly Bernie Sanders.
This is, as I said, an attack on Bernie's trustworthiness. It stinks. And everyone, every single newscaster who stated that the photo was not Bernie did not do the research and due diligence on the story that he or she should have done.
Every one of them should be fired right away. They are disseminating a definite lie.

(5,252 posts)Capehart writes "not cut and dry." He's still working on his the article he promised 13 hours ago ("transcribing now"
Sounds like he's trying to minimize the amount of shit he'll be eating, and that's assuming he has the integrity to correct the record.

(24,411 posts)I think it's quite clear that this was a Swiftboatting of Bernie Sanders. A hit job.
Democrat on Democrat Swiftboatting. Still stuns me.
I think the Clinton camp (and Mr. Brock) turns to journos that they know will do their dirty work. Who knows how this nest of snakes works out their logistics. But they do.
What still hangs over my head about this whole thing...is that somehow they got three U of Chicago alumni to lie through their teeth about this entire situation. That picture was of Sanders. Those assholes had no proof that the picture wasn't of Sanders. They were making baseless assertions. Three people making baseless assertions. Then, the captions on the photos were changed.
So, how in the hell does that happen? Were they paid off? Are they Clinton fans? Republican operatives who don't want a socialist taking over the White House? How does this shit happen?
This was a concerted effort to malign Sanders. There were many liars involved.

(25 posts)To Rappaport after being contacted by Time magazine.Bernies campaign made the video referring to his activism at the time probably saw the photos in the archives with Bernie being identified in the photo by the photographer.Than last month someone changed the name. That is some BS.Capehart should be fired. He also tried to bring up Bernies faith and why he won't talk about it.This all happened on Chris Matthews post debate show last night. Tonight no mention of it.This is going to be a very long primary and election. Stay strong Bernie supporters!

(45,319 posts)"What DOJ found made me ill. Wilson knew about the theft of the cigarillos from the convenience store and had a description of the suspects. Brown fought with the officer and tried to take his gun. And the popular hands-up storyline, which isnt corroborated by ballistic and DNA evidence and multiple witness statements, was perpetuated by Witness 101. In fact, just about everything said to the media by Witness 101, whom we all know as Dorian Johnson, the friend with Brown that day, was not supported by the evidence and other witness statements."

Why do these people have the need to spread these particular messages?
McCaskill discussed during a Live Talks LA Forum that the DNC evidence supported that he went for the gun and that he charged the officer.
I don't understand their goals and need to drive home this messaging. They certainly worked hard at it.

I think that Clinton has lost all sense of time and space. She's fighting like hell to win, but she lacks any regard for the feelings of those impacted by her camp's dirty tricks.
We are nothing to her. Absolutely nothing. She's on a mission to defeat Sanders and the task at hand is destroying his credibility and his honesty. So, she goes at it. Or David Brock goes at it. Whoever.
Not one iota of feeling for Sanders supporters or the people who support him.
It's fucking sick.
I was disgusted by the dirty tricks that Ted Kruz pulled in Iowa. He contacted Iowa voters and told people that Ben Carson was dropping out. And gee, I'm human I formed an opinion about that.
I'm not supposed to form an opinion when the Hillary-Brock brigade devises a Democrat on Democrat Swiftboat attack on Sanders?
The Clinton camp can live with the fallout of their behavior.

(24,411 posts)He's "investigating".
Too bad he didn't do that before he printed his hit piece that accused Sanders of being dishonest; and accused Sanders supporters of touting a photo that was not Sanders.
All of that was lies.
Little ol me spent about a half hour completely debunking Capehart's bullshit.
All it took was posting 4 photos of Bernie at that sit in, and comparing those 4 photos to the single photo that Capehart insisted wasn't Bernie.
Bernie's clothes in all four photos--were the same clothes on the person that Capehart said wasn't Bernie!
It's not Capehart is pulling some complex Woodward and Bernstein investigation. LOL!
Spend 3 minutes glancing at the photos and you'll arrive at the same conclusions that the rest of the world has--you can do it Mr. Capehart. You go!

(24,411 posts)Capehart has demonstrated that he's not a professional. He's not a journalist.
He can ruminate and rationalize all he wants.
Sanders is the man in the photo. It's settled science.
Anything else is a continued Swiftboat attack on Bernie.
I won't be reading anything else from him on the subject.
