February 12, 2016
The largest newspaper in Florida is throwing its support behind Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination, calling rival Bernie Sanders's proposals "unrealistic" and "expensive fantasies."
The Tampa Bay Times said in its editorial Friday that "only Clinton has the skill and experience to appeal to general election voters and build on President Barack Obama's record."
While the newspaper's editors described Clinton as "an imperfect candidate with political baggage that would sink most other politicians" mentioning her "terrible judgment" of using a private email server as secretary of State they concluded her "record as a pragmatic progressive should be beyond question, and so should her resilience."
The Times blasted the Vermont senator's proposals for a single-payer healthcare system and free college tuition as "expensive fantasies," ripping his "lack of a coherent foreign policy and tendency toward isolationism."

(13,877 posts)Think we're also seeing the demise of the relevance of endorsements. Now that we have internet and social media...and, lord help us, people learning to think for themselves...another pillar of The Old Guard losing power.
Also, just another shill to help DWS keep at least one of her jobs. The other one is "taking on water" methinks.

But in all seriousness, I don't rely on editorial boards to choose my candidate. Sure, it makes me happy when they agree with me, but it won't impact my vote.

Secondly, these establishment endorsements are hurting her. They cement her into the establishment. AFAIK, from my own circle, that means she's deeply radioactive and uncool.
Ie no vote for her

(3,111 posts)It is now more than a month away from the Florida primary on March 15th. I looked up this newspaper's presidential primary endorsement back in 2008, and they endorsed Barack Obama-- just 8 days before the primary.
I live in the Tampa Bay area and what I know for sure about this newspaper is this: 1) It lands in my yard every morning. 2) They always make big endorsements very close to election day. So close in fact that the newspaper with the endorsement in it is still on my kitchen table come election day. I usually refer to it for down-ticket information.
So what's the deal St. Pete Times? Why so early?
