2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI witnessed a miracle Thursday night; conservative republican Bernie Sanders supporters
I want to preface this post by saying that I live in SW Missouri. This area is about as right wing as it gets.
My family attended a Bernie Sanders debate watching party on Thursday night. Much to my surprise, there were a group of conservative republicans for Bernie at the party. I have read online that they existed, but I never thought I'd actually meet one (especially here in SW MO). I talked to them for a while and they said that the main reason they are supporting Bernie is because campaign finance reform is the most important issue for them. They said they feel the current campaign finance laws and the power Wall Street has over our political system perverts true capitalism & creates crony capitalism. They feel Bernie is the only candidate on either side that understands how important this issue is.
Although my story is antecdotal, I think this shows the kind of broad appeal Bernie has to independent minded people which would be helpful to our cause in the general election.
Feel the Bern!!

(187 posts)It kills me to see so many poor people in my area continuously vote against their self interests. We now have a supermajority of teabaggers controlling the state legislature. They are hell bent on driving Missouri into poverty at warp speed

(19,089 posts)They need some more of that 'show me' when it comes to the results of conservative governance...
I always ask my friends to tell me of a time and place where regular people did REALLY REALLY good under a conservative government ...
Almost every example in the US is negative ... In the modern era, there are no positive examples ...

(1,642 posts)As a lifelong Trekker, I have the authority to say Sanders would make a far better Starship commander than Hillary.
She is too bellicose -- a word I learned from a Star Trek cartoon episode.
The Articles of the Federation are egalitarian and liberal like Sanders.

Once they make their first Democratic Party vote, it will open the door for them to make others.
There needs to be an icebreaker. Then, they will become accepting of liberal policies and a social conscious.
Politics and religion work on the same centers of the brain. A religious conversion takes a lot of factors to occur, often including a triggering event. The same is with politics, once that change occurs, or the person is receptive, then all bets are off!
Instead of chasing these people away, or making fun of them for being a Republican, they should be embraced, just like how churches embrace people into their fold. Love-bombing and a sense of community are extremely powerful forces.

(39,961 posts)I talk about Bernie Sanders everywhere I go. This is a highly conservative area in a highly conservative state. You would think I would get shut down or laughed at.
The response is the opposite - people here in the Deep South have had it with the professional politico class. We want someone that is real. We are glad that somebody is finally talking about the issues that matter to them no matter how "liberal" (i.e. Dirty Hippy) the message might seem at first blush.
Bernie Sanders is the genuine article. He doesn't just stand up at a podium; he's far more likely to be rolling up his sleeves, and listening to people while he is busy doing all that he can for his electorate.
He has to be an opposition candidate's worst nightmare - he has a strong message, isn't overflowing with skeletons in his closet, and he throws conventional "wisdom" about how to win an election out of the window.
He tells the damn truth. Republicans know it, Independents know it, and Democrats know it.

Keep up the good work, JudyM, and I'm doing my best here, as well. We need to emphasize that down ticket elections - Senate, state senate, Representative, local votes - they all matter a heck of a lot, too.

(39,961 posts)A huge percentage of National candidates come from local and state positions they were elected to. It never hurts to start early, even though the election is several months from now. Name recognition of Democratic candidates can make a large difference.
Cede NOTHING to Republicans, I don't care if the office is head of the committee to decorate the town on holidays. Vote Dem!
(Oh hey, forgot to ask - how did your party go with the ecig "condoms" so that people could test different juices? I'll bet that was a blast!)

(12,647 posts)I've heard several republicans say they're voting for Bernie in our open primary coming up in two weeks. They will not vote for Hillary if she goes to the GE.
I live in a county that votes 63% Repub and it's mostly rural. It seems the folks in the country are hurting pretty badly.

My sons are still there and they are leaning in the same direction as their mom My oldest son mentioned last night that most of his co-workers are for Bernie. That just struck me as odd considering my experiences of living in SW MO from the ages of 9 to 43. That is NOT the SW MO that I knew.

I live north of the joplin/springfield area in of all places "Clinton" and lived in the ozark region for 10 yrs prior and was a lone wolf when Obama ran and it does seem it has gotten even more tea bagger/rep since then. (11,417 posts)reason. It is also the reason repub super pacs are running ads supporting Sanders.
He says he doesn't have super pacs but there is the one from nurses and another one that I can't call to mind right now. Plus he has the right wing super pacs now supporting him because they think he is the easiest to beat in the general.think

(187 posts)The folks I talked to were sincere in their support for sanders. While they disagreed with him on expanding social programs, they felt that the crony capitalism and Wall Street's control of our political system was a threat to a true free market (their words, not mine). They think that Bernie is the only candidate in either party that will take action on this most important issue.
I would have thought one would see a unicorn jump over a rainbow before a conservative supporting Bernie!

(11,802 posts)Small business owner. Was able to attend a well known military academy in town because his mom worked there. Ran as a Republican for mayor in his twenties. Bumper sticker on his truck: "Extreme Conservative". Despises Obamacare. Supporting Bernie. Much for the same reason. $ in politics. He's also in agreement with Medicare for all, which would help him grow his business. Plus, he's down with the minimum wage hike and infrastructure spending because of the kick in the ass the economy would get. He's even hip to the education spending because he thinks we need to catch up with the rest of the civilized world just to be economically competitive and viable. I don't think that many people realize they're democratic socialists. Conservative has become a racket and an empty name tag. A completely meaningless descriptor. This election has the potential to open a lot of eyes.

LOL! Like a rare and exotic beast.
Sanders indeed has cross-party appeal. It will be useful when he president to get things done.
The repubs would never cooperate with Hillary. They hate her in ways that are rabid and irrational, yet absolutely real and palpable.
Have a heart for your excellent post.
