People didn't 'lose their shit' because Lewis endorsed Hillary. Plenty of people have been endorsing Hillary.

People were annoyed because of what he said there - mainly the "But I met Hillary Clinton. I met President (Bill) Clinton."

Because in that very specific context, it implies that he met them DURING THAT TIME PERIOD. Which, by his own words, in his own book, is blatantly false. He let us know that he was first introduced to Bill nearly thirty years later, in 1991, after not having even heard of him til the 70s, or 'paid attention' to him til some speech in 1988.

So in context, Lewis said I don't know what Bernie was up to during the Civil Rights Era, but hey, there were Hillary and Bill!

And no, there they weren't.

Lewis has done many things in his lifetime worthy of great respect. That particular bit of speech was not one of them.
