2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe night Bernie Sanders endorsed Jesse Jackson for President of the USA
There has been a lot of noise on this forum about Bernie Sanders's lack of street credit with the Black Community and Minorities in general. Many reporters who interview Bernie have been pointing to the lack of Diversity in his crowd, compare to Clinton's crowd. Many people on this forum have been questioning if he cares about issues in the Black community. Once more, history gives us answers to these questions. Thank you youtube for providing us with all these great looks into Bernie's past.
I would like to recommend to those, who continue to doubt Bernie's street cred with the Black community to do a little bit of research to understand Bernie Sanders, the person. Look at Bernie's choices. Most of them were not sexy at the time he made them. Most of them were against the main stream.
Some of us might not be old enough to remember the 1988 Primaries, where Dukakis and Jesse Jackson went neck at neck through the winter and the spring. Jesse Jackson was the only Black candidate for president, who had made it thus far in the presidential race ever and had a mathematical chance to actually win the nomination in a very contested race (with Dukakis and Al Gore). Jesse had carried mostly Southern states. Jesse will go on to win the Vermont Caucus. Bernie had previously endorsed Jesse Jackson in 1984 as well. Needless to say, the Democratic establishment wasn't happy with Bernie.

*Bernie Sanders is one of the only elected White officeholders who endorsed Jesse Jackson for President (twice!). In 1984, he got slapped at a rally when he endorsed Jackson (though the slap was probably for remaining an Independent Socialist, rather than a Democrat). In 1988, Sanders and his organizers helped Jackson win a surprise victory in the Vermont caucuses--by one state delegate. In Jesses memorable phrase, Bernie Sanders & Jim Hightower were among the few elected White officeholders brave enough to cross the color line to support him when it mattered.

(58,366 posts)Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders' Secret Service code name is... Intrepid.
"The Bill Press Show" broke the news about the Democratic presidential candidate on its Twitter feed on Thursday morning,
According to Merriam-Webster, the word intrepid is "characterized by resolute fearlessness, fortitude and endurance."

(55,745 posts)Doesn't fit the story line. Next you'll hear that Bernie actually believes in equality.

(194 posts)and lack of depth in which some people view the black community is astounding. And the terms they throw around because their speaking about black issues can be equally insulting. I guess you decided to use the word "street cred" as some type of urban sounding word because you think it adds some type of credibility to your simple minded statements. And just because Bernie endorsed a black candidate like Jessie Jackson, that gives him some type of "credibility" within the black community as whole. As if that's all it takes to build a relationship with an entire community of black people. I voted for Bill Clinton, does that give me some type of "street cred" with white people. Many black politicians endorsed Bill Clinton, does that give them some type of "street cred" with white people. Give me a fucking break!! The discussion about Bernie Sanders and the black community, is not about street cred. The discussion is how can Bernie overcome Clinton's advantage with black voters. The Clintons have decades of building strong relationships and connections in the black community, and that gives her a decisive edge. I'm sure over time, Bernie Sanders could develop those same type of relationships and connections within the black community as well, but he simply does not have that kind of time within this primary season. I will give him credit, he is making progress, but it won't be enough to overcome Clinton's advantage. It's likely he needs to at least split the black vote to have a shot at winning the primary, but the black vote still appears to be Clinton's firewall.

(58,366 posts)I didn't write it.
Having said that if all you got out of the OP was the use of urban language, you missed the forest for the trees.
