2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumUniversity of Chicago CORRECTS photo archives. Confirms it is Sanders.
Sorry, this is the last time I will post on this, but I do think it is important to see that we CAN push back against media smear and narrative, and get things done. All photos in the archives, and there are three sets which can be found by searching "bernie sanders", are all now labeled correctly.

(3,111 posts)My name here is "highprincipleswork", because I know that "high principles" do work. They work the best, and they win in the end.
But the funny thing about high principles and about what is right and good in the world is that in the midst of so much false doing and false saying and horrible behavior, they only work when WE the people stand up for them.
It's a powerful thing, that they work, and that they work the best, and that they work the longest and in the end. But they require work and they require people standing up for them and repeating them as much as other people repeat all the lies.
This is a seemingly small instance of it, but such a powerful teacher and model.
Thank you people!

(12,022 posts)Here's their recent "correction", which has another falsehood:
Update: On Feb. 11, 2016, Danny Lyon, the photographer who took the pictures of the sit-in posted photographs of Sanders at the same event. The rediscovered photos show Sanders seated and facing the camera, wearing a rough, dark sweater and a white shirt, similar to the activist in the disputed photo. Lyon said all the photos are in the same series, leading him to conclude that Sanders is the man in question.
Because of the outtakes, the pictures taken before the next picture, I deduced that it was him, Lyon said. Did these guys switch sweaters or something? Its Bernie. Lyon does not remember taking the photo.
http://time.com/4108379/bernie-sanders-photo-civil-rights/
Here's Danny Lyon's response (on his blogsite):
dektol says:

This is Danny Lyon. Of course I remember taking the photos! That is not what I said on the phone to the Time reporter.
I went with Bob McNamara, a CORE activist and good friend. It was in a hall way, very crowded, so I stood in the corner. I did not sit. I shot Bernie standing (he was speaking when I got there.) I shot him sitting down. He sits next to McNamara, who is wearing glasses Then I, standing above them, shoot the three close ups of Bernie, still in his sweater, speaking with his buddies

Other politicians followed suit, namely Sanders. Unlike his contenders in the 2016 race, Sanders holds a unique and grassroots following on the site, more than any one else in the 2016 race. According to Reddit spokeswoman Ashley Dawson, Sanders is among the most active on the site, conducting his own Reddit AMA to 8,593,027 subscribers shortly after announcing his run for the presidency, engaging directly with users about his candidacy.
There's also a subreddit called "SandersForPresident" dedicated solely to conversation about Sanders, which has 69,150 readers. Posts include details for Sanders public campaign events, calls to action, volunteer opportunities, discussion threads about the campaign and Sanders. For context, the main subreddit for Hillary Clinton's campaign has 407 readers.

This lie went around the world about a humdred times over the last day or two. It cannot be walked back in any proportional way (well technically it could be, but we all know the MSM won't do that). That's how the game is being played, and it absolutely sucks. They need to fight Bernie on policy, not with lies.
I have no idea how we prevail against this kind of thing. It''s great that the pushback got to the bottom of it, still, I have to think it was "mission accomplished" for the Clintons. Capehart's husband (or live-in, don't know if they're married) is a paid Hillary staffer. This didn't just happen organically.

(14,933 posts)When four "alumni" saw the pic and decided it was Rappaport
From TIME: Bruce Stark, who was roommates with Rappaport for two years and best man at his first wedding, said he was sure he recognized his friend in the photo. (Stark can be seen seated in the far right of the photo. He is the African-American man with the hair part.) The way hes holding the book there and his left handthat was a Bruce gesture, and the hair, said Stark, who was well-aquatinted with Sanders and now supports his presidential bid. My reaction is yes, that looks like Bruce.
Two other alumni, Sally Cook, class of 1966, and Robin Kaufman, class of 1965, also said they believed the photo showed Rappaport. Since the image does not show the mans face, the alumni conceded that it was difficult to say for certain the man is not Sanders.

Bernie's authenticity numbers are a probem for Hillary, so they are doing anything and everything to take them down. Which is pathetic, because Bernie has earned those authenticity numbers, he's probably the most honest and authentic politician I've ever seen.

His only interest was in the idea that there was some kind of conspiracy to either undermine him, or created by

(70,516 posts)Somebody went into the University of Chicago archives and changed Bernie's name,
John Lewis tried to say that Bernie had nothing to do w/the civil rights movement,
Jonathan Capehart pushed the meme, and both Time and CNN tried to sell this
bullshit.
This was orchestrated and carried out by many people at many different levels
so my guess is this was the work of "creative response concepts," of Arlington,
VA because they were the ones behind the swift boat lies and Sam Alito's wife
running in tears because the Dems were so mean to her husband in his SCOTUS's
confirmation hearings (Gloria Borger then of CBS helped to carry the water and
push that lie).
And the next question is if and how was "team clinton" connected to this smear
campaign?
DirkGently
(12,151 posts)and the Washington Post. The Capehart guy who wrote the smarmy Op-Ed about "Please stop forwarding this photo of 'Bernie Sanders'" re-tweeted his attack 30-something times yesterday, then retreated saying he was interviewing the widow of the claimed "other guy"it was supposed to be.
The issue they lied about was small, but they sure screamed it loudly and demanded a lot of attention be paid.
It's only right equal attention be paid to who hatched the scheme and why.

(70,516 posts)My guess it was the work of creative response concepts and if

(14,177 posts)I am working on finding family pictures. And seriously I am happy with the blurriest and messed uppest pictures. And I seriously don't care if they are actually family or not. Now, if it was a situation where I actually knew and loved the person I was looking at a "picture" of I would very much want that to be a picture of them and I am sure I would see what I want to see. So, what I am saying is there is no collision. They want it to be a picture of Bruce so they believe it whether it is or isn't him.

To me, the pictures of Rappaport do not look like that picture of Bernie. Not at all. The hair is quite different, the hair at the brow. There are quite a few differences.
That's a picture of Bernie. The photographer has identified it. The U. of Chicago has corrected the mistaken information.
The author of the erroneous article needs to apologize for the mistake. He should have investigated further.

... it is of the utmost importance that we constantly fight the lies of the neo-Cons or else we will lose any semblance of our true past ... they want to drown us in the filth of their propaganda ...

(10,126 posts)from these two photos, with a guy in the center in front of an opening/doorway
with a picture the Washington Post published of Bruce Rappaport and his wife - the other guy some folks thought was where Bernie is in the disputed picture.
This is the side by side comparison
Do those look like they're the same guy (Bruce Rappaport)?
They do to me.
There could be up to a year difference or more between the photos. Randy Ross, Bruce's wife, joined CORE but wasn't at this event - might have been before her time. Bruce looks a little heavier in the left hand pic but it might be that he put on a little weight in the year before he got married.
I also thought the guy in the pic looked a little nerdy with what appears to be a pen pocket protector in his shirt. My first impression of this photo of Bruce at U of Chicago was he looked nerdy.

(14,933 posts)Today, as the WaPo is still standing behind this hit piece, which now says it is a clash of memories. Time magazine and University of Chicago have both corrected the record. Jonathan Capehart refuses to do so and is still adamant on his Twitter feed. I have never seen anything like this. @CapehartJ
