2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHillary says the Republicans won't allow us to make major changes, but at the same time saying she's
the only one who can fight the Republicans. She says that republicans are her number one enemy, but she can cut deals with them. WTF? This is obfuscation at its worst.

Call them what you will, she believes in and regularly practices change.
Indeed she's the most changeable democratic candidate for the nomination

(75,480 posts)A third of the Senate will be up for re-election. Of those Senators not up for re-election, 34 are Democrats, 2 Independents that caucus with the Democrats and 30 are Republicans. So there is a good chance of a super majority of Democrats being elected considering there will be a much bigger turnout this time including Millenials voting for the first time who trend to the left.
In the House all the representatives are up for election and due to greater voter turnout, it too could gain a Democratic majority. So I feel good that Bernie will have a Congress he can work with. I'm not so confident that Hillary and her neo-con policies will be that welcome but she may have to shift to the left if there is nowhere else to go.

(75,480 posts)For instance, let's say she presents a budget to Congress that takes care of her Wall Street and MIC buddies. Congress says, no we don't like it. This is what we want. So what happens? She has to compromise if she doesn't want to shut down government and I don't think she wants that on her legacy. I may be wrong but I doubt if she will do it.

(75,480 posts)loathe to do something that will besmirch her legacy. George W. Bush, another who owed oligarchy, didn't really give a fuck as long as he didn't go to prison or the Hague for war crimes and it seems so far the oligarchy has protected him from justice.

(11,243 posts)Because of the 2010 redistricting and gerrymandering, it is highly unlikely that the House flips. IMO, that has more to do with who the GOP runs than anything. And Clinton has a better shot at flipping the House than Sanders anyway, because, she has never run as part of a political party with 'socialist' in the name.
Greater voter turnout and millennials won't mean a flip in the red districts. Those voters might stay home if Trump or Cruz run, but not if it means a socialist becomes president.

(11,243 posts)It is just how politics works.
To jam your policies through, you need to understand which levers to pull, what your enemy really wants and where they are weak. Your friends, too, when it comes down to it.
So yeah, the GOP will not allow major changes because they control too much of the board, but a savvy player can grind them down, push them where they are weak and come up with more wins than someone who does not know how to cut a deal with the enemy and still keep their caucus in line.
