(14,157 posts)"As one Vermont columnist put it in 2000, getting a straight answer from Sanders on gay marriage "was like pulling teeth... from a rhinoceros." In 2006, Sanders said he supported civil unions but not same-sex marriage, again deferring to states."

George Takei was living in California at the time, according to Bernie, he rather have states decide on who can get married at that time leaving it up states with governors such as Ronald Reagan.
But I'm sure that graphic plays great on Social Media like Facebook and Twitter where the masses will not bother to look at Sander's actual record. That's 2016 politics. Is it legal? probably. Is it honest? Probably not.

I don't think the "one Vermont columnist" had an opinion in 2000, holds much water.

(14,157 posts)It's not an honest graphic by far.

(55,981 posts)would still support DOMA if they could. H. Clinton wants to deny people with chronic pain access to medical marijuana. Tough drugs laws do keep the Prisons For Profit in profits, and they are grateful for her support.
We need a change from the Big Money corrupt culture that H. Clinton represents.

(57,349 posts)Here's the transcript from that 2006 video, Bernie didn't want the feds overturning same sex marriage laws in states like MA:
Bernie never actively opposed marriage equality, he simply said it was too soon to get it passed in Vermont.

It's repugnant to see those who support a candidate who supported DOMA and spoke as an open opponent of marriage equality for decades attempt to parse out one of the earliest and most consistent straight allies the LGBT community has had in politics.
How can you not know these things? Are you an LGBT voter yourself?

(14,157 posts)"Earlier in his political career, Sanders was even more indifferent toward gay rights, which W.J. Conroy recounts in his book Challenging the Boundaries of Reform: Socialism in Burlington. When serving as mayor of Burlington, Sanders told an interviewer that LGBT rights were not a major priority for him. Asked if he would support a bill to protect gays from job discrimination, Sanders responded, probably not."

(45,319 posts)the times, I'm still trying to figure out why you don't. You seem to want to prove a lie is the truth, like Jonny Capehart and you want to do so on assumed authority and with neither personal stake nor interpersonal communication. It is a stale and cowardly political style that will always fail in the face of direct and honest speech.

(14,157 posts)Maybe that's not enough for you.
I was also a Senior NCO in the Air Force and before the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell I wrote a letter to the Air Force Times to let LBGT serve openly. I got a lot of positive responses from younger military members to it. However, it probably ended my career.
But you are right, I don't have a "personal" stake in it myself, unless you count my children. (and brother).
