2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumScalia's death is good news for Hillary and her supporters in my opinion.
If Republicans do try to run out the clock on Obama, and the chances are pretty good that they will, Hillary will have a much easier time bringing the party together because the SCOTUS will be a rallying cry.

(22,308 posts)To you, everything is good news for Hillary.
This puts Citizens United and money in politics right up front as far as issues go. Hillary can only run on Foreign policy, and even then it is always about military actions.
Money in politics is among Bernie's strongest issues. Face it, this hurts Hillary.

(10,406 posts)...just how important this election is. A Democrat in the White House will shape America's future for generations to come. It makes me more determined than ever to help elect Hillary Clinton.

(40,416 posts)The GOP is in deep poo-poo on holding the Senate. The numbers are horrible for them and very good for the Democrats. The last thing they want is some of the GOP senators in the blue states up for reelection to oppose Obama SCOTUS appointees. Make no mistake that this will be a huge issue in those senate races and will likely have down ticket repercussions.
Then there's the Democratic presidential nominee, no matter who it is. Impeding a sitting president's obligation to fill a SCOTUS vacancy will be justifiably huge campaign issue. Moderates and independents will not likely agree with such blatant GOP obstruction.
Either way, the GOP is likely screwed with this strategy, especially in the senate races, but also likely in the POTUS race.
Apparently, however, Scalia's body isn't even cold yet and they are all already saying that the next president should fill the vacancy.
Big mistake, GOP. Huge mistake. If they do that, we win big in November, no matter who gets the nomination.

(5,818 posts)point. Tea parties will revel in Senate GOP obstruction of a USSC appointment. But independents are more likely to focus on unconstitutional roadblocks to executing duties and prerogatives of The President, whoever that may be.

(40,416 posts)The GOP voter base still has plenty of moderates. There, the tea party and evangelicals are a minority (difficult to tell the difference between them).
They won't go for this shit.
This will be a big issue in November. And don't forget. The GOP is in big trouble for maintaining control of the US Senate this year. Many of the GOP incumbents are in blue states and only one Dem is in a red state. How many of those blue state GOP senate candidates are going to go along with the crazies and risk their seats?
This is a clusterfuck for the GOP. Add to that the fact that neither Bernie nor Hillary are going to be quiet about this.
The GOP is screwing themselves.

(1,366 posts)These are:
1- Which party can generate the most fear or elation about control of the Supreme Court
The Repugs will do everything they can to block any nominee from Obama - this comes in the form or rhetoric and actual action in the Senate and this will energize their base but will highly motivate those against them.
Dems will use this as the method to energize their base as a method to support their candidate of choice to counter any of the delaying methods of the Repubs and protect the ability to fill that position.
2- The Repug side of this is pretty obvious.
They will try to delay it. They will do this because they think they will win the next election and have the ability to be able to put a "Scalia" heavy in as a relpacement.
3- The Dem side of this is to be United in the desire to fill this position.
It is not a time to use this new development as a position of political division for candidates to define their differences. It is a time for Dems to use this opportunity to energize their base versus the Repugs. Think of this as you try and decide who to support in the upcoming months. It would be wonderful if you could not see a difference between the Democrats on this and will support whoever becomes our candidate and gives no opportunity for the Repugs to divide us. The Repugs will use this division in anyway they can.

(2,707 posts)"Joy To the World?" Thats why I thought of when I heard Scalia croaked. I can't feel too bad for him, given how many women would've died from coat hangers had he had his way. Or for the troops in Iraq killed because he got to vote for POTUS twice.
