Capehart Question. Amazing coincidence or a relation?

For some reason this whole episode has got me extremely angry mostly because of its so obvious nature as an attempted smear and the fact that it was actually caught.

In reading some of the posts on Capehart and his articles, I came across a pretty amazing coincidence. I am wondering if this really is coincidence and hoping someone knows.

Capehart in his article gives the name Richard Schmitt (note the spelling of last name) as one of Sanders classmates at U of C and the one who led the effort to change the caption at the Archive. His current partner is named Nick Schmit (again note the spelling).

The last names of Nick (his partner) and Richard (the person leading the effort on the picture) are almost identical. They are either related or its a pretty amazing coincidence. It is not a a very common last name.

Does anyone know if they are related even though the last name is spelled slightly different?

Here is the relevant section of Capehart's article

"My recognition was immediate, and largely based on the slight curvature of his spine and his gestures,” Richard Schmitt, a classmate who led the effort to get the caption on the disputed picture changed, told me Friday. He has been waging this effort for more than a year, going so far as to compare the earlobes of Sanders and Rappaport in emails with university officials"

Here is a link to the his partner. http://capitolfile-magazine.com/inside-jonathan-capehart-and-nick-schmits-house

2. Yes it is a question.

It is either a pretty amazing coincidence or a connection. The name is not that common. It is a question not a comment.

But you do not have to participate in this thread if you do not want to. It seems that you are ok with journalists doing hit pieces on people based on incorrect facts and then doubling down when those facts are proved absolutely wrong. Do yourself a favor and just skip these threads.

3. Richard Schmitt tweeted over a year ago that he thought it was Bruce Rappaort in the photo

4. I have no problem with that.

I think it is likely that the classmates made innocent mistakes, its the journalist who did not correct the record after seeing the forensic photographic proof that is the problem.

I am curious if this Richard Shmitt is related to Nick Schmit which might give some clue as to why Capehart did not retract his story when confronted with the photographic proof.

5. I don't think there is any evidence to suggest they are related

I think the most logical explanation is that Capehart is a Hillary fan and thought he could "get" Bernie by going after the photo. It was idiotic on his part and he should be castigated for his sloppy reporting (to put it mildly).

I believe that anything beyond that is conspiracy theory territory, but that is just my opinion.

6. Yes, I am not really thinking as a conspiracy

I thought about this when posting and tried to emphasize the word coincidence that the names are so similar.

Capehart references Richard as the driving force in changing the archive caption.
If he was related to Capehart's partner I thought it might explain the reluctance to come out against him in a non-conspiratorial but personal manner. It would actually lower my anger against him for doubling down. He might be caught in a personal box.

Your name Oberliner piqued my curiousity. I am an Oberlin College graduate. Is your name a reference to the College or town?

I think the name similarities are a coincidence, but who knows.

And, yes, I did go to Oberlin College. Send me a PM for more details if you're interested!

8. I can't remember her name - just found it: Sally Cook

Ms Cook - a retired lawyer, supposedly - helped get the ball rolling too. I suspect all of these alumni were plants, if someone could ferret out their identities. It won't be easy, of course.

I hadn't even noticed that. I was too focused on Nick Schmit's resume (given in one of the photo articles), and how fortunate he was to have the Clintons build it for him straight out of the U. of North Dakota, continuing to today.

You can see his full resume on LinkedIn, but we’ve summarized the key timeline of his career here.

2004 – 2007
Schmit graduated from The University of North Dakota in August 2004, and joined the Clinton Foundation, serving in various roles ending with Director of Finance, before leaving to work on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 Presidential campaign.

2007 – 2008
Schmit worked as the Travel Compliance Director for the Hillary Clinton for President campaign, before her primary defeat by now-President, then-Senator Barack Obama.

2008 – 2013?
Schmit returned to the Clinton Foundation as a consultant, before being tapped to join the Clinton-led State Department in various capacities. His last update on LinkedIn shows him moving into the role of Assistant Chief of Protocol for Diplomatic Partnerships at the State Department in February 2013, the same month that Clinton left the State Department.

I was wondering how does a kid out of ND get connections like that, and then I remembered that ND has a big oil industry. So I don't know, but I'm thinking Nick is probably related an oil or bank executive.

Maybe we'll find out the rest of this story in due time. However, I do have a strong feeling there's another shoe to drop.

10. I just noticed the similar last names today which led to my question.

My instincts are the alumni are not the driving force of this. I can believe that Time and Capehart pushed the issue and converted a question of whether it was Sanders in one old ambigous picture into a certainty that it was not Sanders.

They contacted some Core participants looking for something to use against Sanders and when shown the picture one expressed a question of whether it was Sanders. The journalists then pushed the issue effectively planting the suggestion in people looking at one picture which did not show him head on.

The smear was just unlucky in that it ran into Danny Lyons who had actual proof that the claim was wrong.

11. Yes, I don't think they counted on Danny Lyon stepping in.

He is actually the primary source who was never interviewed before publication. I wonder why? (sarcasm)

What's fishy is the number of high profile participants in it: WaPo, Time, U of Chicago, John Lewis, and Brock. Plus of course the alumni and the widow as non-politicos (as far as we know).

That big of an effort was looking for a big payoff, which clearly they won't get now, thanks to Danny Lyon. It sort of reminds me of the Watergate burglars, writ small.

At least in some parts of the country.

I think you're running down a dead end with this.
