YPSILANTI, Mich. -- In the Democratic presidential race, its become a familiar refrain: Bernie Sanders is a single-issue candidate, according to his rival, Hillary Clinton.
No doubt, the Vermont senator has more to say about economic policy than anything else. But as evidenced by a campaign stop here Monday, Sanderss pitch is far broader than the caricature thats been offered by the former secretary of state.
During an hour-long speech to a crowd of about 9,400 people at Eastern Michigan University, Sanders touched on issues including health care, immigration, criminal justice, climate change and marijuana policy, among others. All told, we tallied 20 issues -- give or take a few, depending on how one counts.
1. Universal health care.
2. Federal intervention in Flint, Mich.
3. Minimum wage.
4. Wealth inequality.
5. Jail population.
6. Planned Parenthood funding.
7. Same-sex marriage.
8. Paid family and medical leave.
9. Federal jobs program.
10. Child care.
11. Trade policy.
12. Prosecute Wall Street offenders.
13. Marijuana policy.
14. Voting rights.
15. Supreme Court appointment.
16. Campaign finance reform.
17. Free college tuition.
18. Tax on Wall Street speculation.
19. Climate change.
20. Iraq war.

Each issue has a descriptive paragraph on the link.
Of course Bernie has been speaking about these multitudes of issues long before this speech, Hillary only counts this as "one issue" and Bill believes the American People shouldn't listen to it because.. "it's what they want to hear" I do believe they make a good couple.

(58,424 posts)Hillary is most afraid of, it overshadows everything else in her world so that's all she sees.
That one issue neutralizes Hillary's biggest advantage in appealing to the oligarchs and mega-corporations to bail her out, the more they do it, the worse she looks.

(22,308 posts)I was at that rally.
If anyone reading this has a chance to go see Bernie... Do It!
The way he interacts with the crowd is really something. I have seen President Obama speak and I think Bernie is better.
I have also been to rallies like the 50th anniversary of the March On Washington and a Union rally at the capital in Lansing Michigan, among others, but none compare to what I experienced with Bernie yesterday.
My only analogy is that it was like seeing The Greatful Dead for the first time (many many moons ago). At least the uplifting feeling I had when leaving was similar. It may be a bad analogy but it is all I have.
Even if you are a Clinton supporter, do it. You won't regret it.

Thanks to absurd lines of attack like this, Bernie doesn't have to make a point about what may possibly be the most impactful issue of all to voters: Honesty and Integrity.

(12,126 posts)I didn't support Senator Clinton in 2008, not supporting her this time either. But I did spend a great deal of time in the 90s and thru some of the 2000's supporting the Clintons, defending the Clintons. And I was very surprised, pleased, and grateful that President Clinton gave that very warm, decisive talk at the Democratic Convention in 2008. They were both very gracious in defeat. Even recently uncovered a collection of articles I had saved from the 90s on Hillary as I truly admired her a great deal at the time...
Maybe it's because the history involved here, more than a decade supporting/defending them that Bill's current apparent 'come apart' over Sen. Sanders and his overall nasty behavior is just truly bothering me. What the heck happened to this man? Or was I just that terribly gullible to believe what must have been an incredible performance as he was never the person I thought he was all that time?

On the Issues
The American people must make a fundamental decision. Do we continue the 40-year decline of our middle class and the growing gap between the very rich and everyone else, or do we fight for a progressive economic agenda that creates jobs, raises wages, protects the environment and provides health care for all? Are we prepared to take on the enormous economic and political power of the billionaire class, or do we continue to slide into economic and political oligarchy?
These are the most important questions of our time, and how we answer them will determine the future of our country.

(6,551 posts)There is indeed a world beyond our borders. Where is his agenda on foreign policy? The Iraq war and trade policy? 2 of 20 topics? And that's it?
North Korea given their nuclear capabilities and recent test? Isis? Iran nuclear agreement? Putin? Syrian refugees and the situation in Europe?
Israel? Saudi Arabia? National security?
TERRORISM perhaps?
And domestically, not a word about GUN CONTROL? Well, that omission does make sense.
