What is Romney thinking? Why emphasize foreign policy now?

It really is the economy which is going to drive this election so I see nothing but downside for Mitt to step on his success in making inroads at the debate by reminding people that being President is more than the economy and particularly since he cannot possibly compete with Obama in this area. Am I missing something?

which will be all about foreign policy. I'm wondering if he is putting a whole bunch of stuff out there as "misdirection" for the third debate where he will do what he did during the last debate and pretend that he didn't mean.

He's going to say a bunch of shit and see what people seem to fall for. Then, he'll either use the same shit at the debate or he'll completely flipflip to something else. And apparently, no one will care (except us). Everyone else will swoon at his manly man-ness and gloss over what he says.

It gives Obama, the DNC & the media the time to tear apart his proposals and lies (some of which is already happening as you can see on other thread titles), and it gives Obama time to study those positions.

I also think Obama will be more prepared this time if Romney pulls those tricks a 2nd time.

Most of his foreign policy speech seemed to suggest that the only major thing that is different between him and President Obama is that he's not President Obama.

if that is what he is doing. Maybe he is lining up John Bolton to be National Security Adviser or Secretary of State.

First, every presidential candidate must make some demonstration that he can handle foreign policy. His last foray in diplomacy nearly lost us our best friend in the world.

Plus, one of the debates will feature foreign policy so he needs to make a show of it ahead of time.

And, of course, he is trying to distract the electorate from figuring out how many lies he just told.

He thinks he's in a position to win the whole election right now, based on his meagre debate bump, and he's throwing down the gauntlet. There is no way Romney entertains the idea that he "cannot possibly compete with Obama" on foreign policy; I think that on foreign policy, like on the economy, his team is over-estimating voters' animosity toward the President.

Everything he does now is to help his debate performances where he can sell his message to the public.

That he is a moderate when it comes to taxes. He just wants to prove to them that he could be commander in chief. He blew his trip overseas so this is his opportunity for them to vote for him instead of Obama.
